Panthers S Nate Salley Up to the minute news about the Carolina Panthers from GoTeamsGo. We'll find the latest Carolina Panthers news so you can chat about here. Quote: Salley sees his chance to seize starting spot
Charlotte Observer, NC - 3 hours ago
In the days leading up to the ongoing Carolina Panthers' minicamp, second-year safety Nate Salley got some advice from his mentor.
Or, perhaps, his Minter.
"Everybody has an opportunity in life and this is yours," 11th-year safety Mike Minter said he told Salley. "You're getting it handed to you, buddy."
Nothing is guaranteed, but the opportunity clearly is there for Salley. As the Panthers end their three-day minicamp today, Salley has been working as the first-team free safety.
"When you step on the field, you want to play," said Salley, a fourth-round draft pick out of Ohio State last year. "... A lot of the older guys have come to me and told me, `You have a great opportunity here to step up and be a good player for us.' That's definitely my goal, and I don't want to let those guys down."
Salley will be asked to fulfill those expectations quickly because, for the moment, the Panthers don't have many alternatives. Minter is back for what he has said will be his final season, but Colin Branch and Shaun Williams, who shared a starting job last season, are free agents and not likely to be re-signed.
