Delhomme On A Short Leash

The Panthers have been emphatic in saying Jake Delhomme is the starter. He'll get all the first-team snaps, and barring injury, will open the season as the starter. David Carr is a viable alternative if Delhomme struggles, and the Panthers won't hesitate to make a switch now that they've got a better option than Chris Weinke.

No doubt about it. Carr wasn't "just" signed to be a backup -- he's meant to push Jake, hopefully getting him back to the form he was during the Super Bowl season, and to take over if Delhomme struggles. Fox was not happy at all with Delhomme's performance last season, so the leash will be very, very short.

I've always said that Carr was a good quarterback but a lot of people reference his stats. But they leave out that one stat. Carr was sacked 249 times in his 5 year career with the Texans, with 76 coming his rookie year and 49 last year. That is god awful. That line is horrible. The Panthers have a good line with some veterans and young guys on it. I really think that if Carr gets a chance, he will be a lot better than he was with Texas and really prove that he is a good quarterback.

This leads me to another thing. I've always been real big on Matt Schaub. Being a UNC fan, I've had a chance to watch quite a bit during his days at UVA. Raycom sports televises ACC football games in this area, and I had a chance to watch quite a few of his games. He was good at UVA and was good with the Falcons when he had a chance. But honestly, do the Texans feel that their line has gotten that much better. Talk about not addressing needs in a draft or with free agency signings.

It doesn't matter who the QB is if the O-Line doesn't block or the recievers get open or if he doesn't have a running game to take away the blitzers.

I know the Richardsons personally, Jerry says he wants to win but lets Mark {his idiot son] call the shots. Ask yourself why doesn't Jerry the owner do any sports show interviews? Especially there in the local Charlotte market he should respect the media and do charity events. Marty Hurney is about as smart as General Custer at little big horn. I have more confidence in The University of Alabama beating the Panthers than the Panthers making the playoffs. I have seen some bone head moves but really guys this teams management has got to be one of the worst in the NFL.

I agree, the Panthers have made some bone-head moves. That's very true, but at the same time, that line is a better o-line than most teams have. But when you have to rely sometimes solely on Steve Smith to get open in order for something to happen, then you are screwed. My O-line coach told us that you should always give a QB 5 seconds tops to drop back, find the open man, and release the ball before you continue on to your next up field blocking assignment.

That's what I have always heard to...more than 5 seconds is not reasonable...your receivers should be able to get open much quicker than that...they need better receivers...

Here's hoping that Carr didn't go from one bad line to a second bad line...

Cool Re: Delhomme On A Short Leash

No doubt about it, Carr will be starting there, barring a great start from DelHomme. Carr is a better player, in my opinion.

Whoa whoa whoa... Carr -Vs-DelHomme Jake is the gunslinger and has a winning record. Carr hasn't proved anything except Texas isn't for him. Jake has been to the big game and played well. Last year his team didn't play as a team and that wasn't his fault. What was his fault was trying to force some throws and make chicken salad out of chicken $h!+. So blame the coaches and owner for that stinking season. They better come up with a different plan this year.

I'd take Carr over Delhomme...I think you have seen the best Delhomme has in him...I think you really haven't with Carr...time to roll the die...

As much as I hate to say it, I agree. I don't want to see Jake have to sit the bench or in another team's jersey next year, but I also want to see my team winning. And if that means that Jake has to take a seat and David Carr come in, then that is what we need to do.

I think Carr has a lot of potential and he showed moments of being a good quarterback when he was not laying on his backside while he was in Texas.

You can say all you want that Carr has not proven anything because of the outcome of his stint in Texas. But the real question is, Was he ever really given a chance? If a QB does not have a good line blocking for him, he is toast.
