Post Panthers sign QB David Carr

Quarterback David Carr, the first overall pick in the 2002 draft, agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Carolina Panthers early Friday morning, according to a league source.

Carr, 27, made the decision after returning from a two-day visit with the Seattle Seahawks and meeting with his wife at their California home late Thursday night. Carr had visited with the Panthers Monday and Tuesday. The financial terms of the deal weren’t immediately available.

The Panthers obviously don’t view Carr as the typical backup. Coach John Fox has said several times that Jake Delhomme, who struggled at times last season, remains the starter. But Carr, who has made 75 career starts, could provide a viable alternative if Delhomme struggles again.

Re: Panthers sign QB David Carr

Well, Carr has a chance to start in Carolina (if Delhomme stuggles) and the line isn't half bad. I guess I can understand his decision to sign with the Panthers. He'll be surrounded by more talented players on the whole. Still, it is surprising that he chose a place where he'll clearly be going in as the backup, hoping that the guy ahead of him plays his way out of the starting lineup instead of having a shot to play his way into it.

Color me shocked...but if he does get to start...he had Smith and Keyshawn to go to...and he won't get dumped on his butt...or maybe his wife wants to move to Carolina...after all, Carolina is the new Florida.

I wish him luck. He needed a change of scenery.

Cool Re: Panthers sign QB David Carr

I'm surprised. Maybe he's not as competitve as I thought. If he were more competitive, he would have signed with a team where he could start.

Well, Carolina is losing patience with Delhomme, so it's not out of the question that Carr could wind up starting by season's end.

That's true, but Carolina made it clear to Carr that he's the backup. I was just surprised that Carr didn't go to a place where he could start in game 1. Cleveland would have made the most sense to me. Even Buffalo. Some team like that who needs an upgrade at QB.

Maybe the thinking is he'd rather sit on the bench and wait for his chance to play on a good team than spend a few more years getting the snot beat out of him playing for a team that can win at most 1/4 of their games. Hard to know exactly what he's thinking, but apparently being on a winner with talented personnel trumps guaranteed playing time in Carr's book.

Yeah, I would think your take is probably right...starting don't mean jack if you get into another case like Houston where you are running for your life every down...maybe he is trying a different approach to his career now.

Wrong, wrong, wrong, Carr is an insurance policy. Jake is the man even if he struggles he is still the man. The Panthers problems stem from not being able to give the gunslinger time to find the targets. The running game is non-exsistent. If that gets addressed in the draft or trade then the Panthers stand a good chance of going deep into the playoffs.

Stoney, my man... you're buying into the company line. They have to say that because they don't want Delhomme to lose confidence. They were at the end of their rope with Jake last year. Hence, Carr. If he stuggles coming out of the gate, you have my personal guarantee that Fox will not hesitate to make the move.

I agree...nothing against Jake...but Carr can be an effective starter as well...and the name of the game is winning...maybe if Jake was named Peyton or Tom Brady, he might get the benefit of the doubt...as it is, he is not elite enough not to have to show the job is his...

No Marty Hurney knew he had blown it with his picks. He knew his trades sucked and the offensive line was non-exsistent. The running game was one of the worst in the NFL I could have done that well and I am no running back. Mark Richardson is the "Real Culprit" behind the Panthers. They should have cut or traded half the players they have. But what do they do re-sign Doubtful Dan Morgan. They don't learn from thier mistakes. Jake is frustrated and I don't blame him but his gunslinger attitude needs changing. Steve Smith is good but he isn't Superman. The team needs to address the running game. Cut Foster trade Jenkins to Miami for Ricky Williams draft LeRon McClain FB- Alabama and find another tightend. Then they will have success again.
