Weinke to Start against Steelers

Quote:
Preparing for what could be his second straight start, quarterback Chris Weinke was asked to reflect on his first start in four years last Sunday versus the Giants.

“Any time you lose it’s never fun,” said Weinke. “That’s the bottom line. I said after the game that I felt like I had a good week of preparation. After not being out there for a long time, it was fun to get back out there. I love to compete, and I had my opportunity to compete on Sunday.

“We did some good things, but we didn’t make enough plays. When it comes down to it, I can’t turn the ball over three times

You know the guy is not that bad of a passer. But we have to cut down on the interceptions. He 34/61 for 423 yards passing with 1 td and 3 int's. Now, unless you are Peyton Manning, there is no way you should be passing 61 times. The combined rushing for the team was 15 carries for 45 yards. Sad if you ask me.

A guy I work with brought up a point that I found to be very interesting. The Panthers have one of the most dangerous and explosive players in football today in Steve Smith. He missed the first two games of the season, and yet he still has 1025 yards receiving. The thing he brought up to me that I found to be interesting was he said that the Panthers should utilize Smith in a Reggie Bush type style. Put him in the backfield some. He is very explosive and has major moves. He can't get hit no harder than he does when Delhomme puts it 5 feet above his head and he goes up for it and gets hit mid air. There is no reason as to why Smith cannot be a factor on every play.

It was very interesting and in some ways I agree. We have 3 games left, and desperation needs to kick in.

Carolina Panthers QB Jake Delhomme doubtful against Pittsburgh ...
CBC News, Canada - 14 hours ago
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme is doubtful for Sunday's game against Pittsburgh because of ligament damage in his right thumb, meaning Chris Weinke most likely will make his second straight start.

Delhomme had been listed as questionable and didn't practice all week, although he did throw on the side Friday. He started 66 straight games before missing last Sunday's loss to the New York Giants.

Weinke threw for a team-record 423 yards but had three second-half interceptions against the Giants. The Panthers (6-7) probably will have to beat the Steelers to remain alive in the playoff race.

Re: Weinke to Start against Steelers

Using Smith in a Bush-like role. Could work, but it could be risky too, having your top offensive weapon taking hits from the D-line. See, I tend to think the injury risk is too high. But then, when you're fighting to stay in the playoff hunt, you pretty much have to pull out all the stops.
