I don't like it that Carolina has only 81 points and they are third. They normally don't win often so why put them third (Or are they in fourth?)?

The top 3 teams of the conference will always be the first place team from each division. so even though carolina has less points than the penguins and the sens, they are first in the lesser-quality southeast division.
Just like minnesota is 3rd in the west conference even though they have less points than the stars and the ducks - the wild are first in the northwest division.
I sometimes think, That's silly to give them a bye, because it should only be about points. But interestingly enough, look at the Cup winners over the last ten years: the devils have won twice - the only other two teams to win the Cup are Tampa bay and carolina - and they are both from the supposedly less competitive southeast division.
