Benson wins Truck title over Hornaday in final laps

Todd Bodine may have won Friday night's Ford 200 Craftsman Truck Series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but a pair of calls in the pits earned Johnny Benson a seventh-place finish -- exactly what he needed to secure the series championship.

The great story behind this race is that the title was up for grabs by either driver. Who ever finished ahead of the other would win the title. All series should be this way. Pure racing !!!!

An adjunct to your above statement, Steve, is that they did it (7 pts) without benefit of a phony playoff format to obstensively "make" things exciting. Ditto 2007 - 54 pts. Ditto 2006 - 27 pts. Ditto 2005 - 55 pts. Ditto 2004 - 46 pts.

As you say, "Pure (real) racing!!!!"

Re: Benson wins Truck title over Hornaday in final laps

'course there were those late cautions that added drama.

a cynical person would say they were planned; but it makes you wonder how much it would cost to get a racer to spin or wreck or dump some debris in order to give the media (and NASCAR) more drama to hype the racing "excitement"...

then there's the "team" orders idea where the junior (or senior) team driver does something to tighten up the field if their guy is starting to loose ground. (what exactly was Harvick's reason for being in the #2 truck anyway? Ryan was in the pits and, obviously, available!)

by far, the "way-est out" is the "uninterested" party (a la, Shrub) helping one or another of the "contenders" to victory... (was that because he was brand loyal or because he didn't like the obvious "team" play going on? remember, he was shunned by his HMS teammates so maybe it was "pay-back" of sorts...)

whatever, it certainly made for an interesting season ender.

I just remembered one of the cautions (don't remember if it was the CTS or NWS race) was because of a spring rubber on the track. so puzzle me this: how does a spring rubber come loose and fall on the track when they're tied to the springs?

I think the only time a spring rubber would be attached to the spring is if the team anticipates the need for one and leaves it dangling off the spring in case it's needed later in the race. During a pit stop, the tire changer would just slide it into the spring coils without having to get one from the pit box.

If the team starts the race with a spring rubber in the spring or if they add a spring rubber in mid-race, it will not be attached to the spring.
