I'd have to see some proof of the accusation. But, my first guess would be Norm Benning.
Norm is somewhere north of 50 years old and though he's been kicking around the fringes of NA__AR for a long time, I don't remember him having any super fast super speedway starts where he lasted more than a handful of laps.
I wouldn't be surprised if, as they were coming down for the green flag and Benning, knowing he doesn't have a competitive piece of equipment, thought to himself, "Self, why the Hell are you doing this?"
Hey, Talladega is the track where Bobby Issac heard a voice in his helmet tell him that if he kept racing he was going to die, so he pulled into the pits and retired as he climbed out of his Charger. Maybe Benning heard the same little voice?
