Cal sweeps Pac-10 Player of the Year Honors

The California Golden Bears under head coach Jeff Tedford continue to register "firsts" in program history. On Monday afternoon, junior running back Marshawn Lynch and senior cornerback Daymeion Hughes were named the Pac-10 Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively. It is the first time Cal has won both awards in the same year; in fact, prior to this year, the Bears had been honored with just four Pac-10 Player of the Year awards in total.

Kudos to Lynch and Hughes for winning the honors; they sure sound deserving enough.

Lynch, an Oakland product, has turned out an impressive trifecta in the Pac-10 thus far this year, leading the conference in rushing yardage (107.1 yards per game), all-purpose yardage (142.3 yards per game) and touchdowns (13, tied with Jackson). The junior became just the second player in Cal history with two 100-yard rushing seasons and is the fourth Golden Bear to tally over 3,000 career rushing yards.

Hughes, also a first-team selection in 2005, entered the season as one of the nation's top cornerbacks and only solidified that status during the year. He leads the Pac-10 and ranks second in the nation with eight interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns. The Los Angeles product also has 62 tackles and 11 pass break-ups this season. For his career, he has 15 interceptions to rank second all-time in Cal history.
Here's a tough question for you Cal fans - which one of these guys is the better player? If you could only have one, would you take Lynch or Hughes?

Since my pro team is the 49ers, and we have a good running back in Gore, and since I want Lynch to stay one more year, I will go with Hughes. One more reason, defense wins you championships. At least, that is what I have heard.
