| Vols Intercepted Cal's Defense Signals From ESPN article: "Tennessee receivers coach Trooper Taylor said the Bears also made the Volunteers' jobs easier. Taylor said the Volunteers were able to pick up California's defensive signals from the coaches' box and relay the signals to the sideline. So sometimes, Ainge knew what defense he was going to face before he even stepped to the line of scrimmage." http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=s...bach_mark&id=2571133 If he was intercepting the calls electronically ie through malfunctioning headphones, I believe that is against the rules. If they are picking up hand siganls then I believe that is ok. If they were picking up the calls through the malfunctioning headphones, it is supposed to be reported, with both sides forfeiting the use of them until they are fixed or for the rest of the game. I always pull for the SEC but not when there might be cheating going on. |

| UT Intercepting Cal Bears Signals? Hi BamaBoy, welcome to GoTeamsGo. That's the 1st I've heard of this. I'm guessing if there was some real NCAA violation, it wouldn't be just one small mention in just one article. So it's nice to hear that you're pulling for the Vols Look forward to chatting with you.

| Re: Vols Intercepted Cal's Defense Signals It is true, read the Espn link. The announcers during the game would have been clueless as to it happening. Plays get stolen all the time either by figuring hand signals or by posturing, that is legal. The curiosity in this matter is the plays were being picked up on from the coaches box. They don't use hand signals from the coaches box they use headphones. So, if the calls were being picked up electronically ie through the headphones, there is a rule requiring it to be reported to the officiating crew as to what is going on. Both teams at that point would be required to give up the use of the headphones until the problem is fixed. I think it should be investigated especially since it was a Tn. coach picking up the calls at a Tn. home game. |

| Re: Vols Intercepted Cal's Defense Signals Well, the only thing that's true is that ESPN said this: Quote:
While I admit I am a big Vol fan, I think you're reading more into this than there really is. I read that story as the Vol coachs in the coaches box picked up the Cal hand signals. I guess I can see how you could possibly interpret the quote to mean they "illegally eavesdropped on Cal's headset transmissions" but it would have been news if it had been that way. And it's not been reported anywhere like that. Has it? Show us some media report that clearly says/claims/alleges some cheating went on and you'll have plenty of people join your rally for an investigation. Til then, enjoy the season. I hope we meet as 2 undefeated teams on Oct 21

| Re: Vols Intercepted Cal's Defense Signals He said he picked up the calls from the coaches box not by hand signals, now if he wants to clarify it then so be it. Hand siganals are not used from the coaches box...no need, they have headsets. Here is a qoute from the article since you lack the ability to read it from the link provided. "Tennessee receivers coach Trooper Taylor said the Bears also made the Volunteers' jobs easier. Taylor said the Volunteers were able to pick up California's defensive signals from the coaches' box and relay the signals to the sideline. So sometimes, Ainge knew what defense he was going to face before he even stepped to the line of scrimmage." |

| Re: Vols Intercepted Cal's Defense Signals I read the same quote. We've heard your interpretation. Here's my take: The TN coaches in the coaches box were able to "pick up" the signals. The signals that they picked up were proabably by seeing the hand signals between the Cal sideline and the Cal players on the field. You can believe whatever you want. But apparently neither the media, nor California, nor the NCAA thinks anything illegal happened. Show us some media report that clearly says/claims/alleges some cheating went on.

| Re: Vols Intercepted Cal's Defense Signals 2 ranked teams play and their was cheating going on that ESPN was aware of? It would be on every talk show from Jim Rome to Pardon the Ineteruption, especialy with it being UT and the dismal season they had last year. I done a search on that quote and the only thing I came up with was that one article and some message boards link to it. Besides if they did pick up the hand jesters think why little leage baseball has them hidden.
