Will the Sabres take him up on it? Arbitrators gave him that this weekend. He earned 1.938 mill last season, but he had a stellar season and particularly stellar run at the Cup. 58 points in 48 games, 19 points in 18 of playoff games.
Talk here at home (my home, not Toronto) is, Gee, wouldn't the Leafs like him. We can't afford him, though. 5 mill for one year is a ton of cash.

He goes from $1.98 million to $5 million -- that's quite a raise!

I don't know how a team's highest paid player can be 4th on the team with 58 points, 2nd in goals with 25 and 6th in assists with 33. In fact, Briere wasn't a team leader in any major statistical category as far as I can tell, though he did contibute 19 points in 18 playoff games. I don't see where he's worth the $5 million personally.

You know, i should say nix the stellar year and say that he got this raise based on his post season play and taking the Sabres as far as he did.
During the year, what i remember about him most was, his mouth. But now he's elevated to 5 mill a year.
let's see if the Sabres take him. My guess is, they will.
