The Hurricanes got frustrated fast and received 20 penalties totaling 81 minutes. Finally, Ward was pulled (4 goals in 7 shots) after Gaustad shoveled in a loose puck at the end of the first to put Buffalo ahead 4-0 before 14 minutes elapsed. Grahame replaced him.
