Sabres' Teppo Numminen needs more surgery to correct a heart condition.

The 39-year-old defenceman, who has had two heart operations for an irregular heartbeat, did not report for team physicals yesterday.

"After undergoing examination in connection with his pre-season evaluation, the Buffalo Sabres medical team has determined that (Numminen) requires surgery to correct a cardiac condition,'' said GM Darcy Regier.

It's not known when Numminen will have the procedure and how much time he will miss.

Yeah this was a surprise for me, I didn't realize his history.
Buffalo is nursing a lot of sore spots. Losing Numminen is big.

He's started the long road back, according to the Associated Press: "Numminen said he's been walking -- but not allowed to drive a car -- and intends to begin riding a stationary bike soon. He said his ribs are still sore from surgery, and he won't be allowed to have any strenuous hockey-related workouts for at least another six weeks... The 39-year-old said he'll wait until then to determine whether to return to play for his 19th NHL season." Think he'll be back?

Who knows? maybe after Christmas he'll feel strong and fit enough.
