Brian Simmons, the former Bengals linebacker now with the Saints, used to talk about how quickly time passes for an NFL player.

One day, Simmons said, you're a bright light, a priority in a team's organization. The next, almost overnight, you become expendable. It happened to Simmons Feb. 28 when the Bengals terminated the final two years of his contract.

Now it is happening to his NFL buddy, Takeo Spikes.

The Buffalo Bills are entertaining trade offers for Spikes, a linebacker the Bengals drafted No. 13 in the 1998 draft, just four picks before they selected Simmons. Both were anchors of the team's new 3-4 defense.

Spikes did not have a great year in 2006, which is understandable given that he was returning from a torn Achilles' tendon in 2005.

Spikes has indeed been traded. According to the Associated Press, "The Philadelphia Eagles acquired Pro Bowl linebacker Takeo Spikes and quarterback Kelly Holcomb from the Buffalo Bills on Monday night for defensive tackle Darwin Walker and a conditional draft pick in 2008." What do you think of this deal, Bills fans?

Walker is good player, got 9 sacks last year but Takeo Spikes is better or at least he was till he got injured. Perhaps he hasn't returned to form in th Bill's minds and his salary was too big to be iffy on a player liket that. They gave up Holcomb too who is a good backup QB. Maybe this is one of those trades that helps both sides.

Thanks Goth but you always say to do research but your advice got turned against you as I researched all of your Eli posts especially when he was doing bad to find some venom towards him and lo and behold I found one. "We often sow the seeds to our destruction." -Aesop's Fables, but it's fun talking a bit of sports smack once in a while (wait till baseball in New York starts! ) Back to Spikes and Walker, thinking that in mine and Goth's view Spikes is the better player the Bills must have traded the Holcomb/Spikes package as a salary dump. Great inside linebackers are harder to find than defensive tackles. Yeah I think you have to follow the money in this instance.
