ABCNews.com has an "Article" on MMA that is fully of plain wrong information. It pictures the sport as being barbaric and without rules. The writer, NELLIE SCIUTTO did a terrible job. It does make you think about what else you read on ABCNews.com, how many other stories do they just write misinformation about.
Let's take a look at what's wrong about the article...

Fighting is not in rounds, as in boxing, but just one, long fight that doesn't end until one fighter is knocked unconscious, or "surrenders." A fighter can strike and grapple, but eye-gouging and biting aren't allowed.
|
-Fighting does in fact take place in rounds. In all sanctioned states, non-title fights take place in 3, five minute rounds. Title fights take place in 5, five minute rounds. Also, there are many actions which are not allowed in a fight. Eye-gouging and biting are just two of them.

The sport has been around since the 1920s, in some form or another, but it is a modern trend because the Ultimate Fighting Championship -- the UFC -- is now a legal sport, with rules. Hence, the difference between the UFC and mixed martial arts -- MMA.
|
-What? When was the UFC illegal? There is no difference between the UFC and MMA. That's like talking about the difference between the Dallas Cowboys and pro football.

Mixed martial arts competitions do not fall under the UFC brand name unless they are blessed by the UFC, and as long as they follow said rules. This is not a sport that big money is poured into -- or earned, unless you're a bettor. Hmm. That may have something to do with the newfound broad popularity.

-UFC is a brand. Just as Elite-XC is one. The IFL is another. WEC is another. Strikeforce is one more. Hello?! Not a sport that big money is poured into? Huh? UFC continues to be one of the most profitable PPV businesses next to pro wrestling and boxing. The top UFC fighters make six figures and even seven figures. The lower guys don't make nearly that much though.
People should try to know what they write about.
