| UFC wants event Super Bowl weekend in Vegas Zuffa LLC, the UFC’s parent company, has officially reserved a Feb. 2 fight date for a SuperBowl weekend card in Las Vegas, MMAjunkie.com (UFC news, MMA news, UFC rumors, UFC gossip, fighter interviews and event previews and recaps - MMAjunkie.com (formerly UFCjunkie.com)) has learned. UFC officials have requested the date with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the local regulatory body. The event is expected to take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Over the weekend, a source close to the venue told MMAjunkie.com that the UFC has already begun prep work for the event. The organization traditionally holds major pay-per-view events the same week as the National Football League’s SuperBowl show. It’ll be the UFC’s fourth consecutive year in which the February tradition has been held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. While the Feb. 2 date has been requested, the NSAC has yet to approve it, states the commission’s website. However, based on the organization’s history, the UFC’s request is unlikely to be turned down. As MMAjunkie.com has reported over the past month, UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture will likely headline the event. The 44-year-old champion last defended his title against Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 74 in August, but he suffered a broken ulna bone (the smaller of the two forearm bones) while checking a kick in the first round and doesn’t expect to fight again until 2008.
