Sox trading Wells for a minor leaguer: Is this Theo Epstein waving the white flag? It seems like it to me. They're not exactly up to their ears in starting pitching.

Yeah, David Wells was the only starter who actually pitched VERY well against the Yankees this year. We shelled Schilling twice, crushed Becket a couple times, murdered Lester, and made the back end of the rotation look like a joke. But Wells pitched very well against us ( this year and last). Now that he's gone, it's over... ( IMO)

He may well have been the pitcher that could beat the Yankees but during my last look at the standings there were a couple of other teams out there that they have to play. Wells is an aging artifact and sadly that is something the Red Sox continually buy into and end up with non-winners on the roster. While the trade of Wells may not have brought exactly everything needed I'm not sure having a has been is any better. At least you can trade off the younger stock for something a little newer than Wells.
