OAKLAND, Calif. -- Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was scheduled to leave the team Tuesday and return to Boston to be examined again for an irregular heartbeat.

Big Papi was a late scratch for Boston's game Monday night at Oakland for what was first thought to be the flu. Ortiz, who on Sunday hit his major league-leading 47th home run at Seattle, already spent time in a Boston hospital earlier this month for the condition

He said he thought it was caused by fatigue.

"He will get a clean bill of health before he plays again," manager Terry Francona said. "The games are important, but we have a responsibility to do what's right."

Said Sox reliever Mike Timlin: "It's not good. This game is nothing compared to someone's health or family. We don't play games with people's lives. I don't know any of the details. All I can do is pray for him."

the season is basically over and Papi wont be worth anything in the future if they dont address this now

The Red Sox announced on Tuesday that outfielders Manny Ramirez and Wily Mo Pena will also return to Boston to undergo further examination for their injuries.

Boston is familiar with this type of problem , having lost Reggie Lewis of the Celtics years ago. Let's hope that Ortiz is okay and they can put him on some meds to alleviate this. He deserves a shot at breaking Foxx's homer record of 50 in a season.

Ortiz was sent home from Boston's road trip after experiencing an irregular heartbeat for the second time in a week." Here's hoping Papi's in good health.

He's been released from the hospital, and according to the AP, "David Ortiz said he is in good health after experiencing heart palpitations and expects to return to the lineup Saturday."
