Re: David Ortiz is no MVP! I think that it is absurd to think that Ortiz could not win the award this year. Ortiz's clutch abilities negate the fact that he does not play defense and it comes down to his numbers against others and plain and simple, he has just done more this year than ahyone else in the American league and maybe in the game. He leads the league in HR, RBI he is hitting near .300 and is near the league lead in total bases and walks. Derek Jeter has had a great season but when it comes down to it, power hitters almost always win the MVP with the exception of Ichiro in '01. The last MVP's have been guys like Pujols, Bonds, A-Rod and Vlad. Like it or not, David Ortiz has become the new face of the game and the voters cannot ignore that. I think that this conversation begs the question of who is the most feared hitter in the league. In the bottom of the ninth who is the last player that the opposing closer wants to see? I think we all know who that is.

| Re: David Ortiz is no MVP! What you guys aren't getting is that here is the biggest series of the season, and Manny is more concerned about a scorer's decision(there wasn't even an RBI involved) than he is about beating the Yankees. And then Ortiz basically makes a fool out of himself supporting Manny's position to the Boston press, who are now going to make him look like a complete idiot with this.

Re: David Ortiz is no MVP! The only thing that Manny Ramirez is really focused on is money. He doesn't care what team he plays for as long as they put a lot of cash into his pocket. He has a World Series ring from 2004 so he isn't motivated to get another one anytime soon. David Ortiz is a rising slugger who makes poor decisions, as legend brought to our attention. It just so happens that Manny Ramirez has a ton of power and is capable of being an MVP...if he puts his mind and effort into it.

Re: David Ortiz is no MVP! Ortiz with another homer last night as Boston beats the team I hate most in the universe after them-the California Angels. I refuse to call them by their correct name. Angels give Boston a run when Orlando Cabrera fields one of the easiest double play balls imaginable, hit by Doug Mirabella who carries a piano to first base. Instead of flipping to the second baseman, Cabrera decides he will try to beat Alex Cora to the bag. He doesn't, gets taken out as he still throws out Mirabelli, and the eventual winning run scores. The night before Vlad Guerrero takes off for third base, except the pitcher hasn't thrown the ball-he flips it to third where Lowell tags out Guerrero who doesn't even bother to slide. The night before Figgins drops a fly ball in the outfield to give Boston two runs. This team pees themselves whenever they see the Red Sox, no matter what the place or time.

Re: David Ortiz is no MVP! Not necessarily-ARod won the MVP with texas a few seasons ago-and they ran last. Ortiz badmouthing an official scorer who used to be a writer, now that ain't gonna help his cause.

Re: David Ortiz is no MVP! He hits loads of homers and drives in loads of runs but hes a DH. Now dont jump on me guys cuz I dont think that that should disqualify him from the running but it should be taken account. Now as I said his homers and RBIs are MVP BUT...his batting average? He should bat at least .320 to offset sitting on the bench all but 5 times a game. If he does then yes make him the MVP. Best clutch hitter in the game no doubt about it!

Re: David Ortiz is no MVP! If I know one thing about the Boston media, it's that they love to build a guy up so they can then proceed to tear them down,a la Ted Williams, Yaz, Jim Rice, Clemens, Mo Vaughn, Nomar, etc. What makes you think that Ortiz will escape this eventual fate?

Re: David Ortiz is no MVP! If David Ortiz continues the rest of the season on pace, he should finish up with 59 HRs and 154 RBIs. Does anybody want to explain why he doesn't deserve the MVP Award with those numbers? Legend has a very good point above. I agree with him, as a I usually do. To tell you the truth, the reporters in Boston aren't reporters, but critics. There is no need for critics in baseball since every player goes out there and tries his best.

Re: David Ortiz is no MVP! Remember when Cal Ripken beat out Cecil Fielder for MVP when Ripken batted .259 and the Orioles were in like 2nd to last while the Tigers were contending and Fielder batted .270 with 51 homers? If one thing is sure about the MVP its that nothing is for sure...or sometimes makes sense!
