Francona was not available for interviews yesterday, but a year ago a friend of his was quoted in media reports as saying that Francona had stopped dipping tobacco.

last year he was betting someone he could give up the chew.....some times it looks like he's spitin from chewing brown gum.......chew is the hardest form of tobacco to give up.....nothing is mentioned on t v about players chewing or not chewing......political correctness .....

It is a very hard habit to break. I have had to quit several times. I stopped for 10 years then decided to try again. I have been off it for over a year this time. I don't ever want to do it again.

Cheers to you for stopping. I have smoked cigarettes and cigars but never did chew or whatever you put in your lip. Just cannot get past the idea that it is really gross. Out of curiosity ... what ever made you try it ???

I was just the opposite. While smokeless tobacco is gross, I grew up hating cigarettes. I hated the smell of them. It always made me sick.

I was at a frat party in college with too much to drink. Somebody gave it to me to try. I ended up liking the mint Skoal. I still really like it,but I didn't like the tobacco taste it left in my mouth overnight. No matter how much I brushed I couldn't get rid of it.

Thats kinda what happened to me, except it was in high school and all of my friends were on the football team, they did it all the time, so I tried it and was hooked.
