Mirabelli loss shocks Wake

FORT MYERS, Fla.— For the first time since Doug Mirabelli was released by the Red Sox Thursday morning, knuckleballer Tim Wakefield talked about the loss of his personal catcher for the last seven seasons.

“Shocked, very shocked,” Wakefield said yesterday inside the clubhouse at City of Palms Park before Boston’s 16-6 win over the Reds.

“I don’t know what else to say about it. I was on the field (during batting practice) and somebody came and told me that Dougie got released and I’m like, ‘What?’ I came in and found out the truth and (Sox manager Terry Francona) called me in the office right after that and told me. I’m saddened by the whole situation, but it’s a business decision on their part.”

His .200 average didn't help in the last 2 years.

Haven't heard anything about him yet. He's 37, only played in 48 games last year, avg of 231 so i suspect that there aren't many teams fighting to get him. Detroit already said no thanks.

He is better than many back-up catchers out there but that doesn't say much. He cannot hit consistently anymore.

He wasn't to valuable to Boston obviously. I believe I read where he had signed a contract for $150,000 for this year. No financial loss for Boston.
