FORT MYERS, Fla.— For the first time since Doug Mirabelli was released by the Red Sox Thursday morning, knuckleballer Tim Wakefield talked about the loss of his personal catcher for the last seven seasons.
“Shocked, very shocked,” Wakefield said yesterday inside the clubhouse at City of Palms Park before Boston’s 16-6 win over the Reds.
“I don’t know what else to say about it. I was on the field (during batting practice) and somebody came and told me that Dougie got released and I’m like, ‘What?’ I came in and found out the truth and (Sox manager Terry Francona) called me in the office right after that and told me. I’m saddened by the whole situation, but it’s a business decision on their part.”
