When the Red Sox signed Curt Schilling to a one-year deal in November, they made the assumption that, you know, the guy would be healthy enough to pitch. But as the Boston Herald reports, that's no longer a guarantee as Schilling has a "significant shoulder injury" that might end his season before it even begins:
While neither Schilling nor Sox officials could be reached for comment, baseball sources have indicated that the club has at least inquired about the possibility of voiding the one-year, $8 million contract Schilling signed last November. It is not known to what lengths the Sox have gone on the matter, but their threat has been serious enough to create a conflict between Schilling and the Red Sox.

While the precise nature of Schilling's injury is not known, it is believed that the right-hander is suffering from an injury to the rotator cuff and/or labrum that might require surgery. It is possible that the sides disagree on how to treat Schilling's ailment and that a course of treatment, too, is a part of their disagreement.

This will get nasty before it is settled. The article hints that he may have hidden the injury when taking the physical for the one year extension. 8 Million is a lot to pay someone to stay home sick.

I would also think that contingencies such as this are written into contracts. After all the guy isn't 27 years old plus in '95 he had issues. Oh yeah this will in deed get nasty.

If Schilling knew about the injury when he signed, the Sox will definitely be off the hook for the contract. Fraud, plain and simple.

But what if he signed the contract in good faith? It should be pretty easy to prove it he was hurt prior.

I'll be watching this one with some interest! Glad he didn't end up back with the Phils.

hey guys i know its been awhile but im glad to be back after all this time, but any way the fact that if he knew that he had that injury he should have called it a career, but lefty is right this is fraud and could get schilling into money trouble.

just found this update on ESPN

BOSTON -- Curt Schilling has an undisclosed injury in his right shoulder, and the pitcher has been squabbling with the Boston Red Sox over whether he should have surgery that could cost him the season or try something less drastic.
Writing on his blog, 38 Pitches, Schilling said Thursday night that he has agreed to abide by the club's request to rely on rest and rehabilitation.

I am sure we will hear from the players union about this before it is settled. If rest doesn't help it, do they still pay him to have surgery later?
