Should HGH be allowed in pro sports under professional supervision?

With all the talk about the Mitchell report, I saw this question somewhere & thought it would be interesting to see the response.
Should HGH be allowed in pro sports under professional supervision? Why or why not?

Re: Should HGH be allowed in pro sports under professional supervision?

HGH is illegal without the use of a valid prescription. It shouldn't be freely used like tylenol's, if that's what your asking.

HGH can be dangerous if abused and unless your doctor (not one of those ones who hands out pills to any celeb) prescribes it for you for a real reason, no it shouldn't be used.

Of course there are some who believe HGH has no positives to pro athletes when it comes to things like baseball, basketball, football, etc., so make it legal and convince the guys that it's useless. But I disagree with that.

No because then, everyone who uses with professional supervision will just drop the line " the doctor said I could".

Re: Should HGH be allowed in pro sports under professional supervision?

I'm not sure a definitive line can be drawn in the sand. Lets look at what Pettitte claims was his case. It was used twice to try and return him to the roster quickly. Is that abuse ?? Not really. That is the same scenario as giving a dying person morphine.

My question would be who are these Dr.'s going to be ? If they are on a teams payroll then I begin to question the authenticity of the diagnosis. I guess it would have to be a Dr that has some official connection to baseball in general but I immediately think of the Dr that Elvis Presley had on the payroll. Dr. Nick did nothing more than whatever Elvis wanted. That's another whole subject but I say yes they CAN be allowed but for the correct medical reasons. If a player is just trying to gain body size/strength ... then no.

I think each league should hold a mandatory seminar each year for players and their families and go over the dangers of the drugs that can be legally used under a doctors care...and then say, "It's your life, if you want to shorten it for short term glory...go for it."

ZERO effect. Addiction can come in many forms. The need to be the next golden glove, Cy Young winner or whatever else can cause too many players to look for ways outside the norm to reach that superstar status. Independent physicians who will monitor it's use and be responsible and to coincide with that ... drug testing. If we really want to see an end to it then impose rules that will penalize if you are not within tolerance. If you want fame and fortune then be willing to pay the price for it. I'd most certainly give them a sample of whatever they want if I was being paid $10 million per year. I made far less than that and was subject to random testing.

I feel the same way. It is OK to use in my book to help the healing process. But, how do we make certain that is what happens??

Personally, I have never known anyone that has had to use it, for any purpose. But I may not have been told!!

Does anyone have any practical experience with it's proper use, that posts here? Understanding the appropriate uses for it may help us all to judge.

Give them what they want...their lives..they want to shorten it with their families looking on...then they deserve their fate...

The problem with that is the pressure it puts on honest athletes to live up to the standards of the ones who are frauds. And the fact that it makes us all question the integrity of the sports we all love. I feel just the opposite. The sporting world should be doing thier best to track down and weed out any and all cheaters.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: Should HGH be allowed in pro sports under professional supervision?

There are some very valid points here. I think there should be a 'panel' comprised of doctors, MLB officials & 1 representative from each team. They would be the ones to approve it for medicinal reasons.
