Boston Puts Schilling On DL

ATLANTA -- Boston Red Sox starter Curt Schilling is headed to the disabled list because of soreness in his right shoulder, though an exam found no major damage.

Schilling will be placed on the 15-day DL when the Red Sox get to San Diego on Friday for the start of a weekend series. He had returned to Boston for treatment after losing to the Braves 9-4, his first start without a strikeout since 1993.

The good news for Schilling: An MRI exam found no major problems. But the right-hander received a cortisone shot in his ailing shoulder, which he attributed to tendinitis, and the team knew he wouldn't be able to make his next scheduled start on Sunday.

"Structurally, nothing's changed on his MRI, which is really good," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said before Wednesday's game against the Braves. "We're going to try to sit on him pretty good because we want to get him back and give him a chance to be Schilling and be consistent."

Maybe he'll have time to consider retirement.

Cool Re: Boston Puts Schilling On DL

He's definitely starting to break down. Now to me, Schilling is a hall of famer. I don't care what his numbers are. He has been a great pitcher for an extended period.

Now that I can agree with. My pet peeve is that they stay around too long after they peak and begin to destroy their own historical value.

Re: Boston Puts Schilling On DL

Well, the news isn't good for the aging Schilling. According to the AP, "Curt Schilling is out through at least the All-Star break because of a sore right shoulder, and he still doesn't even know when he can begin throwing again... The Boston Red Sox on Wednesday slowed their already deliberate determination on when their 40-year-old ace can resume pitching." Now I'm starting to wonder if he'll be back at all this year. What do you think?

Re: Boston Puts Schilling On DL

i think im fine with it ........ he has been roughed up a lot lately ..... Gabbard has had only 2 starts ... 1 he looked good the other he looked bad, and we have Lester still

all we have to do is basically play .500 ball the rest of the way to be assured the division, and i have no doubts they can do that without Schilling

I agree. He may not have the numbers of some others, but he is great for the game. I always thought they should have a spot in the HOF for players like Shilling. They were great players, but also famous just for being themselves. People came out to see them.

Re: Boston Puts Schilling On DL

The problem is that when you put guys like Schilling in the Hall of Fame with just over 200 wins, what do you tell the guys like Tommy John and Bert Blyleven with over 270?
