RedSox World Series Victory - Best Sports Story?

USA Today has named the Boston Red Sox winning the World Series the greatest sports story of the past 25 years. Good choice?

I think I agree with it too. They did something that was never done before coming back from a 3-0 in the series. Then didn't they sweep the Cards? I am not even a Red Sox fan and I was pulling for them.

Where will Bonds' HR chase land on the list or will it just be tied to the Balco story?

See, I wonder what they mean by the biggest sports story. I personally though the Red Sox winning the Series was great - a team finally overcoming a long period of struggle to finally reach the top of the mountain again. But then, what makes a story great? McGwire and Sosa's home-run chase saved baseball when it happened, but today it's tainted. The Pete Rose ban probably has never been at the top of anyone's list, but look at how long people have been talking about it in one form or another. I don't know. By the way, the full article can be viewed online at Glory, heartbreak, infamy - USATODAY.com

Good discussion on this right now on Mike & Mike in the Morning. Some they're discussing that aren't on the list: the formation of the BCS, the Janet Jackson Wardrobe Malfunction, the Pats upsetting the Rams in the Super Bowl, the Scott Norwood miss in Super Bowl XXV, the USC vs. Texas Rose Bowl, Doug Flutie's Hail Mary Pass, Kirk Gibson's homer in the 1998 World Series, Bill Buckner, the Laettner jump shot, the Browns and Colts relocating... thoughts?

I'm sorry, a lot of those are on the list - Flutie, Gibson, Buckner, Laettner... I must've missed a transition in the conversation, because they had been discussing emailed suggestions about things that should've been on the list and weren't. So a lot of those are actually on the list, in the 10-15 range.

Yeah, the fact that such a big franchise won the World Series only once over the past 25 years is a pretty big story I guess... How can such a wealthy franchise be so bad for so long?

What a terrible article...

How can a boring (and you have to admit the 2004 WS was boring) series be the best thing that's happened in sports over the past 25 years???

Plus, only people from New England enjoyed watching the Red Sox win... The BoSox are easily the second most hated team in baseball (after my beloved Yanks)

The 1998 home run chase was far more exciting... So was the Villanova v. Georgetown game... Dale Earnhardt's death was far bigger and more important.... Kirk Gibson's walkoff homer... etc... etc...

In fact, this list left out a lot of big moments/stories.. How about Mary Lou Retton performance in the '84 Olympics? Or Mike Tyson biting Holyfield's ear?

Surprisingly bad article from USAToday.

what a surprise

i think it was mentioned above and has been left out here since

yep, azrael mentioned it, the Red Sox did something in that run that has never been done before ............... they came back from being down 3-0 to the Yankees ........ that alone is very impressive ...... throw in that they hadnt won in 86 years

i think it should be the entire 2004 playoff run and yes its #1

Kerri Strugs was as dramatic...only broadcast on delay...and later it turns out the medal was clinched...but drama equal to if not better than Retton.

And the Sox please...they played better when they lost in 1975...now that was a series....
