"Big Papi" David Ortiz

Ortiz is definitely one of the best hitters in the game today, and it looks like the Sox are about to give him a big-money extension to keep him Boston until 2011. The Boston Herald is reporting that "A long-term contract extension with David Ortiz may be close to being wrapped up, as Ortiz and the Red Sox have engaged in negotiations over the last couple of days." Word is the deal is going to be worth $50 million over 4 years. Normally, I wouldn't like this kind of money going to a DH, but Papi's a game changer.

Better than say $49 million to Nate Burelson of the Seahawks wouldn't you say?

Nope...just wanted to point out the difference of being wise with $50 million as opposed to being foolish...

Welcome to the board Simon...Do you feel that Big Papi might be pressing to hard to duplicate his efforts of last season with men on bases?...

Re: "Big Papi" David Ortiz

ty for the welcome

im not sure what his problem is, seems possible he is trying too hard

but with his new contract you would think it would be time to relax and do his thing

but he has what, 10 now ?

and a 6 month season, could he be headed for 60 ?

I hear you man...I do think the man is not relaxing...Papi has a lot of pride and he is putting way too much pressure on himself...he should just go out an have fun...the hits will come...I still say he will get his +110 by the end...

Re: "Big Papi" David Ortiz

The majority of major league baseball players put an excessive amount of pressure on themselves. It just so happens that a few athletes perform better under pressure, but that is a minority. For most of the proffessionals, they strike out do to pressure. Glance at Shawn Green of the Diamondbacks for an example. He has a bunch of talent, but doesn't use it under pressure from the fans, his team and well...everyone else!

Re: "Big Papi" David Ortiz

Just a couple of thoughts. Pitchers and teams in general are more wise to his likes and dislikes. They understand better how to pitch around his abilities. He also may have the feeling that because they didn't do the big dance last year that he needs to take it upon himself to perform better. With those two situations any player is bound to struggle.
