Never one to know how to keep his mouth shut, Gary Sheffield is at it again. According to today's edition of the Boston Herald, Sheff now says he wanted to play for the Red Sox this year, that they were his first choice.

The former New York Yankees slugger had only one team on his wish list as last season wound to a close, though he dared not disclose it. Assuming the Yankees would fail to pick up his $13 million contract option, Sheffield had every intention of playing for the Red Sox [team stats] this year.

“Boston was my first choice,” Sheffield said yesterday before his new team, the Detroit Tigers, lost, 7-6, to the Red Sox in Grapefruit League play. “But things happen for a reason. Sometimes you don’t get to go where you wanted to go.”

I have a feeling there will be a lot of unhappy Detroit Tigers fans after they read this, eh?

If he continues to open his mouth, he will have worn out his welcome in Detroit.

This might be a potential explanation for his lack of production in New York.

Ahhhhhh for once the bean town bombers didn't buy a well used (up) player. I ilke Sheff but age does funny things to ball players.

Sheffield is still a decent player, but not comparable to his days with the Dodgers.

Age withers the skills and thus statistics of all players, except Barry Bonds.
