Big Papi Backtracking on his Jeter comments

David Ortiz was quoted as saying that Jeter would not have the numbers he has if he was hitting in the Boston line-up, and then said that he would like to see him do what he has done in Boston. After this hit the fan, he denied saying anythinga about jeter, but I heard the quotes, and he said Jeter's name three times and referred to him as "he" twice. Ortiz is beginning to believe that he is bigger than the game. This just about puts the last nail in his MVP coffin.

I don't see Big Papi diving into the stands for a foul pop up, In fact I don't see Big Papi with a Glove on his hand.

Re: Big Papi Backtracking on his Jeter comments

Geez, I like Papi and all - but a DH dissin one of the best all-around players in the game? Nuh-uh, man, that doesn't fly. I'd love to see the two go head-to-head in some kind of skills challenge to see how bad Jeter would embarrass Ortiz. For my money, there's no other every-day player in the game I'd rather build a team around than Derek Jeter.

Being a New England born and bred boy I am a Red Sox fan but even without hearing that statement I just cannot see Ortiz or any other DH as an MVP. HR's and RBI's are only on the offensive side of the game. He is great at what he does but he is not a total player. There ... I've said it.

Good for you LSC9901, you are a true baseball fan and can recognize the importance of defense.

Cool Re: Big Papi Backtracking on his Jeter comments

There is such jealousy surrounding Jeter. A-Rod made similar comments a few years ago. And because of that, Yankee fans have never warmed up to him. You can't take on Jeter publicly and win.

All hail, Jeter!

Ortiz says that the paper misconstrued his statements, and that he never meant any disrespect to Jeter...

Heh, gotta love all these people who say something stupid to the press and then once someone tells them how stupid it was, they backtrack. They were "misquoted" or "taken out out context."

Re: Big Papi Backtracking on his Jeter comments

I love all of Yogi Berra's yogi-isms.

I even wrote a report paper for English back in High School about Yogi Berra's wise quotes. For extra credit, I got him to sign it since I met him the same week. An odd coincident but it justified my A+ for the semister.

Yogi!! You got to love him I also like him in that Aflac commercial. How lucky for you to meet him. Did you meet him at his museum or something, just curious.

Re: Big Papi Backtracking on his Jeter comments

I took a visit to Cooperstown and it just so happened that they were making an induction that weekend so all the players were around town.

I met Yogi Berra, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron in the bathroom of a pizzeria. It was extremely odd when you are in the urinal next to a superstar and then you figure out who he is and you realize he has some work to finish before he can sign autographs.

I think he is right...Jeter in another line up would have less numbers...but maybe Papi in a different stadium would also have less numbers...but even if he is right...it lacks class.
