I am in the same position Cougar. This was the first year I watched the NBA. Although Michael Jordan was cool in that Looney Tunes movie. Actually, I suspect I could watch him all day. I watched Shaq kind of ramble down the floor, I like Dwight Howard,but he has a lot to learn. Young Rose was outstanding. Understand my limitations here, but I have to go with Kobe Bryant. Not only his physical talents, but his ability to stay cool on the floor.

| Re: Greatest Basketball Player of All Time it's a good point about what we know and have seen in our lives... however, stats don't lie, and John Stockton is the all time champ in 2 of the 5 major statistical catagories... steals, assists--- also there are rebounds, blocks, and of course points.

, and few would pass up on Magic Johnson to get to Stockton...BTW, Wilt lead the league at one point or another in Rebounds, Assists and Scoring... ...and you got to take into account that before 1974 (I believe) blocks and steals were not kept officially... So Stockton is good...but he does not belong in the same breath with Chamberlin, Jordan, Russell, Roberston, and a few others...

| Re: Greatest Basketball Player of All Time It's not about who we'd take on a team when the player was in his prime... it's about career... and longevity and consistency is a huge part of what you take into account when you do a list like the all-time NBA team. |

And pray tell what is lacking in Oscar's numbers???....or Magic for that matter???...Oscar and Magic could pass and play D as good if not better than Stockton...let me know when Stockton scores and rebounds like them. |

As for Magic Johnson, his combo of his huge size, his quick feet, and his great vision do make him one of the best ever... but the case for stockton can still be made. None of the other two could steal the ball like he could... and he could score, he always had double digits during his career, and averaged over 13 points per game, johnson was at 19, but didn't have the assists or steal or longevity stockton had. As your quote says, maybe on any given game, we would take Magic, but as a career, the totals tell you all you need to know... Stockton - Ast. 15,806 Johnson - Ast. 10,141 Robertson - Ast. 9,887 Stockton - Pts. 19,711 Johnson - Pts. 17,707 Robertson - Pts. 26,710 Stockton - Stl. 3,265 Johnson - Stl. 1,724 Robertson - Stl. N/A Stockton - Reb. 4,051 Johnson - Reb. 6,559 Robertson - Reb. 7,804 Stockton - Blk. 315 Johnson - Blk. 374 Robertson - Blk. N/A I think, it's clear that Stockton had the better career over MJ, the Robertson thing is more iffy, but again he as in a completely different era. |

Man get real...You have one, and I mean one criteria...and that is a long career...if that is all that matters to you than knock yourself out...but lets not argue something that is not even arguable... ...Don't tell me that Stockton (who is actually my favorite point guard) is better than the other two...Stockton was a one dimensional player... a good one...but still all he could do was play the point...Johnson (whom I hated given I am a Celtic fan), could be inserted into Jabbar's center spot in an NBA final and excelled!...Johnson had 3 Playoff MVPs, 3 Regular season MVPs, a few rings, and 2 All-Star game MVPs...and Stockton???...lets see...one All-Star game MVP...he was also 1st Team All-NBA ONE time...Johnson???...lets see...9 times!!!...And who was he beating out all those years...hmmm...give you one guess...Stockton... BTW, go look up the Big O's honors...they are way more impressive than Stockton too...but hey what are titles, and MVPs and Scoring, and Rebounding, and All-NBA 1st team honors compare to Assists and Steals right?.... What's that???...oh you missed all that huh?... Hey if you really, really, really can't see who the better player is, I can't help you man...carry on...but let me know when Johnny Stockton finally wins a ring will ya...I mean the best of the best should really have at least one, no??? |
| ||||
| Re: Greatest Basketball Player of All Time Yeah, probably should have a ring-- and I am not saying Stockton was the better player, just that it could be argued he had a better overall career... I never once said or thought that Stockton was the best ever, I just said it could be argued... then I tried to argue it; but you've got more ammo with your side. |
