Lightning Mitchell started a professional women's basketball league in 1991. The league had teams across the Midwest and was growing in popularity, according to its creator. By 1995, the WBA league had eight teams from Chicago and Minnesota, to Nebraska and Oklahoma - and in Missouri (the Kansas City Mustangs). That year, the league championship game drew a crowd of 3,500 people. Mitchell thought he had a good thing going when he contacted the NBA in an attempt to form a nation-wide league. Mitchell said they told him to "keep them updated on the leagues progress." Then in April of 1996, the NBA launched the WNBA The Midwest league couldn't compete with the WNBA, and shut down soon after. Years later, Mitchell has filed a $500 million suit against the NBA and WNBA, claiming he suffered mental distress and pain when the NBA stole his dream.
