Best NBA Teams of All-Time

Back in 1996, as part of the league's 50th anniversary celebration, the NBA asked media members to vote on a list of the 10 best basketball teams of all time. The 10 teams that they selected were as follows:

1964-65 Boston Celtics
1966-67 Philadelphia 76ers
1969-70 New York Knicks
1971-72 L.A. Lakers
1982-83 Philadelphia 76ers
1985-86 Boston Celtics
1986-87 L.A. Lakers
1988-89 Detroit Pistons
1991-92 Chicago Bulls
1995-96 Chicago Bulls

Ten seasons have passed since then. In your opinion, are these still the 10 best NBA teams of all time, or has another club cracked the ranks? And which would you say are the very best, the creme de la creme, the top 2 or 3?

Cool Re: Best NBA Teams of All-Time

I would say the 69-70 Knicks were the best "team" of all time. They played the game the right way: Unselfish. I don't think any other teams crack this list in the last 10 years.

Re: Best NBA Teams of All-Time

Walton's 1977 Trailblazers were another example of a great "team" but I don't think they make this list. Lots of great teams that didn't win, like the old Bullets of Unseld, Hayes, Riordan, and Chenier and another that did, the 71 Bucks with Jabbar, Oscar, Lucius Allen, Bobby Dandridge, and Jon McGlocklin.

I think the Pistons are the weakest team on the list ...I think the Celtics of 74 or 76 were at least better than that...With apologies to Pundit, but I would not have the Knicks as high as 3rd...Maybe one Bulls Team, but not both...the Bulls never had a dominate center...82-83 76ers?...You guys would let that team stay that high up?...I take my chances with Walton's Blazers over the 76ers...the 71 Bucks also do belong on the list...No takers on Shaq and Kobe?

Nope. This was one of my favorite squads of all time, any sport, but they don't make it.

And nope, no team since Dah Bullssss makes it. Maybe Detroit -- i'm waiting on history, the Heat and possibly the Mavs/Spurs to make that call.

Cheers, all.

That Portland team was a great team. That year was the last year the Nets played on LI, and I was at the game when Portland came in.

Bill Walton played 1 end of the court that game. He barely ran up on the offensive end and Portland still won the game.

Yes. How many years did they play at the Colliseum?

Re: Best NBA Teams of All-Time

I'm not sure which year or which spot, but I think the Spurs should have a team somewhere on the list. They have been one of the more dominant teams this decade.

Walton and Maurice Lucas aside, that team was starless...they were a collection of average players at best that played great together...the 76er team they beat had a lot more star power...some teams jsut come together well...Portland 77 was one on them.

Re: Best NBA Teams of All-Time

The Spurs teams the Lakers used to have to beat in the playoffs to make the Finals was much better than this current bunch, and they never won anything.

Thumbs up Re: Best NBA Teams of All-Time

I'm going to have the say the Mavs this year. I believe this because they are quite a dominate force. And not only can Dirk take control but they can relie on their sixth man. I think this is a team that should be on the list and not neccessarily the top 8. but at least number 9 or 10. I think another modern team that should be on the list is the suns. they have been quite dominate the last few years and Steve Nash carries the team quite well. Not only Steve Nash but Marion. The team is a tough team. And should be on the list.
