Wilkins, Dumars Hall of Fame inductees

While official announcements aren't due until Monday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that all-time Atlanta Hawks leading scorer Dominique Wilkins has been elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame. Likewise, the Detroit Free Press is quoting a Pistons team source as saying that Joe Dumars will also be among the class of 2006. Thoughts?

Wilkins defintely. Dumars...nip and tuck...I don't see it as clear a choice...yes, great guard...heart and soul of a fab Pistons team...but in my book he falls just short...unless you take the intangibles like "front office duties"...than maybe...

Joe Dumars definitely deserves to be in the Hall. He was vital component to the Piston title teams and was a pretty good defender who probably did the best job on Jordan. Add to the fact that he's been a great GM, minus the whole Darko thing, and he's a sure thing, IMO.

Wilkins definitely. Dumars no. Dumars was a very, very good player - not a great player. To me the Hall of Fame should only be for great players.

I am with you all the way Pundit...Dumars is not even a Sidney Moncrief in my book...

Re: Wilkins, Dumars Hall of Fame inductees

Dumars averaged 16.1 points a game over 14 years, good but not spectacular. But this is a case of a high character human being getting the nod for the Hall based on everything he has done in and through basketball. Very good player, very good GM, even better person. Personally, based only as a player, he doesn't come close to belonging, but the committee must have added in other factors. The example of Moncrief was excellent, he was better than Dumars. But the NBA award for Sportsmanship is named after Dumars, that had to count for something.

Sportsman ship and good character have done little for Dale Murphy's chances in baseball...I think it should all be within the field of play period, or you can get very subjective...I am still waiting for the day Shoeless Joe gets in...heck Ty Cobb did...and he had some major charcter flaws that probably go beyond Joe's...

Looks like we can add a third name to the list:

"Connecticut women's coach Geno Auriemma also was elected to the hall in his first year of eligibility, according to a basketball official with firsthand knowledge of the voting process."

Source: AP

Good election? And which of the other finalists should be in?

Women's hoops? I personally have never watched more than a few minutes here and there of women's college hoops so I have to abstain on this one.

I don't watch a ton of ladies hoops, either, Pundit. But I do know this much - Auriemma and Pat Summit ARE NCAA women's college basketball right now. That could chance somewhat with this year's Final Four (neither UConn or Tennessee are involved), but right now its all their show.
