Cool Most overrated NBA Coach

Easy: Jeff "The Fake Phony Fraud" Van Gundy. If Alan Houston's miracle doesn't bounce in against Miami a few years ago, he's bagging groceries at the nearest A&P.

Sure, he had that one run with the Knicks but all the pieces fell into place that year and it took Larry Johnson to hit a miracle 3 against Indiana to do it. He's still living off that year. Besides that, what has the guy ever done?

He hung the Knicks out to dry because he saw the handwriting on the wall and blamed it on the "I miss my family nonsense" . Wait - let me play the violins.

Yet the media paints him as the John Wooden of the NBA?

Re: Most overrated NBA Coach

I have never seen Van Gundy as overrated. Not that I think he is in the upper-echelan of coaching but he has always just been a non-entity to me. Just another coach one more higher away from officially being in a revolving door. I could understand where he gets more publicity in New York than anywhere else though. Knicks fans would probably kill for that 8th seed right about now.
For most overrated coach my selection would be... this is difficult. Because any coach with longevity has been consistently in the playoffs, While every other coach has not been around long enough to be considered overrated. We'll say Rick Adelman, if for no ther reason than he has been with The Kings for about ten years now and never even made an NBA finals.

Cool Re: Most overrated NBA Coach

The media in NY - especially the radio blowhards love Van Gundy. What they don't realize is that the little wiesel played them like a cheap violins.

Re: Most overrated NBA Coach

Surprised nobody has come up with Pat Riley yet. What did he win without Jabbar and Magic? The x's and o's in pro basketball are the least important of the four major sports.

Cool Re: Most overrated NBA Coach

Legend: I could see why you would say that about Riley. But the job he did in NY with the Knicks was amazing. They were only one shot away from winning it all in '94. But since he left NY, he hasn't done didley.....

I recommend the book the Life of Riley. It was written about 10 years ago but it illustrates his metamorphisis from an ex-jock beach bumb to the slick "Coach of our Time. "

He orignally was talked into doing radio commentary for the lakers. Then when Jack McKinney got into that bike accident and Paul Westhead took over, he begged Riley to be assistant coach. Then Magic gets Westhead fired, Riley throws some gel in his hair and the rest is history. It goes to show you how being in the right place at the right time can change your life.
