Eddie?!?!?!?!?

Ah, Gotham Knight, Nitch is a man of few words, i tell ya...

And perhaps i should take Nitch to task for a couple of these films, especially Eddie. Eddie? Eddie?!?!

I'm speechless for once. However, if you'd like to read my 1000-word rant posing as a film review i wrote in 1996 or so, it's here.

Eddie. Sheesh. Nitch, dude...

On the other hand, Glory Road is quite an astute choice. Great story.

Cheers.

Thumbs up On a slightly different tangent...

...Did the hooplah that Glory Road caused here in North Texas get any play elsewhere? It seems the folks at what used to be the University of East Texas, and is now Texas A&M-Commerce, were unhappy at the way their folks had been portrayed in the movie. As you may recall, the idiot players and students back then treated the black players pretty poorly. The people at TAMU-Commerce got their panties in a knot and denied that they would ever have done such a thing and that if it did happen, it wasn't as bad as the movie makes out. The makers of the movie made a half-hearted apology, but obviously they stood by their movie.

I love where I live, but being from hereabouts, I have no doubt at all that the events in the movie are, if anything, toned down. It hasn't been that long that the nearby town of Greenville had a sign that proudly stated that it had "the blackest land and the whitest people." Thank goodness that's mostly behind us now. I hope.

Lightbulb Re: Argument starter: Top 8 Basketball Flicks

As the movie says and back in that time period there were no other teams that were all African American starters im sure if this occurred in Arknsas the same thing would have happened, or anywhere else. It is true that Texas has it's bad things. Heavens gate cult originated in texas and the davidans cult in waco. Texas has also had white surpremcy groups for 300 years that have last only in texas. Look in to Jasper Texas on wikipedia. JFK was assinated in dallas. I don't think that the movie was really trying to dis any race or city or town but emphsize how much of an underdog the team was. If people cant handle what happened in the movie they can't handle the truth this was how things were. if people think this is a blow at texas they are mis informed. I actual did not notice where Texas was dissed in the movie. I thought it had some GLORY for texas the team was a texas college, the coach was from texas. P.S If people dont want to see a movie like this whatch Eddie or like mike top picks on my list. You could even see space jam and find no contervsy except the party where they say shuan bradly is on of the leagues best

Nah, no rip on Texas...

Nitch and Gig,

I don't think Glory Road was a rip on Texas any more than, say, Remember the Titans was a rip on Virginia.

The truth is that America has a long and sordid history with a very unique type of racism (America is the only country that employed the methods in its modern slavery). In Texas, it is said, everything's bigger (Right, guys?) and so every facet of the Texas A&M story is magnified, from the coach's success to the underlying irrational race hatred.

Plus, it's a movie "based on a true story," which always signals blowing everything true out of proportion anyway, and the story did take place in Texas, just as Hank Gathers' story happened in California, as Jim Carroll's story (The Basketball Diaries) happened in New York City, et cetera et cetera et cetera...

Cheers.

Love & Basketball was great. I liked Glory Road. And I remember liking that Pistol Pete movie as a kid.

Re: Argument starter: Top 8 Basketball Flicks

I agree that the movie wasn't trying to dump on Texas or East Texas State in particular; it was just showing it like it was. I think the irritated people at TAMU-C should just accept that it happened and go forward. That was yesterday, this is today; we can't dwell on the past anymore. A good movie like this shouldn't have to deal with a silly controversy like this little "tempest in a teacup." Any good movie based on real events, especially involving black athletes before about 1980, is going to have some controversial stuff in it. I don't remember such a brouhaha when a movie like "Remember the Titans" came out.
