2006 NBA Draft

I know its a little early to speculate, but I thought I would share this website and see what people think of their mock NBA draft board.

http://www.nbadraft.net

Nbadraft.net has my favorite team, the Magic, taking J.J.Redick. I think Redick will be a good pro. Probably in the lines of a Jeff Hornacek. A guy who can shoot from the outside, but is crafty around those screens, can take it inside and even get to the line. However, I would rather them take Rodney Carney from Memphis. He's an all around player who can score, but I believe the best part of his game is on defense. He can develop into one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA. You can't count on Grant Hill to play more then 40-50 games and the Magic desperately need a small forward to replace him.

Let me know what you think.

Re: 2006 NBA Draft

I think the draft this year is chock full of solid role players. With everyone out of high school having to wait a year to be eligible for the draft, and it is going to be relatively thin. People are sold on Rudy Gay and Adam Morrison as eventual all-stars, but I don't get the impression they are that much better than, say, Gay's teammates, Allen Ray, Foye, Krauser, Killingsworth, Tucker, etc. I am actually interested to see if these guys can elevate to the next level and develop into something better than role players. Much of this depends on who drafts them. Anyone ever notice you don't see much talent develop in Atlanta, but when they finally leave either through free agency or trade, many of them end up flourishing. i.e. Boris Diaw, Jason Terry. Is anyone going to be surprised if Marvin Williams ends up being the same cautionary tale with Marvin Williams, who failed to even make the rookie-sophomore game after being picked #2 overall.

Re: 2006 NBA Draft

Excellent post and I totally agree with you. The 2006 Draft does look like it will produce quite a few solid role players who could become semi-stars. I do think there are some potentially good players in the mid to low 1st round. Two guys in particular from Michigan State: Maurice Ager and Paul Davis. I think Paul Davis could very well be another Brad Miller type.

A guy like Rudy Gay has taken a step back in his development and in a normal year could've even be considering for the top spot. It's a shame guys like that don't stay another year or two to help their games, but it's the Me Generation and I'm sure he wants to get paid. Who could really blame him..

Actually Jason Terry was good in his five years at Atlanta, averaging 19 pts a game twice. His game maturing is more of a reflection, I think, of better talent around him then the lack of developmental skills from Hawks organization. Same thing with Diaw.

The Hawks made a major mistake in drafting ANOTHER similiar player in Marvin Williams. What they needed, and deseparately, was a point guard. Passing up on Chris Paul was a major mistake. They fell into the trap of looking at someone's potential rather at someone's current skill level. Thats why they are the hawks.

Re: 2006 NBA Draft

One problem I see with a team drafting Adam Morrison is that he has to be "the guy" on the team. That is his style of play and his personality and that won't be a problem on some teams with no discernable go-to guy or star but on others that could create some big problems.

Example: I think he could do great on a team like Portland where they have a few solid players (Randolph, Miles, Telfair) but no real star or dominant player. A team like the Sonics, on the other hand, would not be as good a fit with players like Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis who are all-star caliber players.

Re: 2006 NBA Draft

Two rounds into The NCAA Tournament a few guys who may have improved there draft status are Patrick O'Bryant (They already have him at tenth, but I think he could go higher), Roy Hibbert (This guy is 7'2, athletic and seems to have great anticipation, I didn't even see him on that board but maybe its because he is only a sophomore. He would be out of his mind to not leave early) and Allan Ray (This board has him early second round but after the performances in the tournament after his eye fell out of his head, he has to go higher than that. This guy has Michael Redd written all over him).

the other problem with Morrison is he couldn't gaurd anyone with a gun and a badge.
I would assume the lottery will be full of Euro longshots. With many of the highschool players leaving early last year, and none of the highschool seniors being able to enter this year, it is as everyone has noted... Very thin.
Whoever ends up with the #1 pick this year will be cursing the new rule... left with only dreams of Greg Oden. However, whichever team is lucky enough to have worst record in the league next season should be quite happy.
This is probably the worst year in modern NBA history to have a top 10 pick.
