Major League Baseball 40 - 40 Club *

This thread is for discussing the Major League Baseball 40 - 40 Club *.

For those of you that dont know, (GDK), the MLB 40/40 Club is only for players that have hit 40 home runs and stolen 40 bases in a season.

You may have noticed the *, there is a good reason for that .. and it is the crux of this topic.

All Members of this exclusive club, all four of them, have admitted or been suspected of using Performance Enhancing Drugs.

Jose Canseco .. 1988 .. 42 HR's .. 40 SB's .. admitted to using steroids

Alex Rodriguez .. 1998 .. 42 HR's .. 46 SB's .. admitted to using steroids

Barry Bonds .. 1996 .. 42 HR's .. .. 40 SB's .. has had books written about his 'alleged' steroid use .. still has yet to openly admit it

Alfonso Soriano .. 2006 .. 46 HR's .. 41 SB's .. ok, let me possibly be the first to cast the light of suspicion on Soriano .. 2006 was the one and only season that he hit more then 40 home runs. I believe he is/was on the juice.

So there you have it, one of the most exclusive clubs in all of professional sports forever tainted. If any record that is on the books deserves an * I would say it is this one.

Bud Selig I hope you're listening .. or reading as the case may be.

Re: Major League Baseball 40 - 40 Club *

Please Simon...I know the 40/40...I know the 30/30 club...and the 30/50, 20/ 50, 20/80.. etc... etc...etc...

first of all, its a Club not a record, so what exactly are you going to give an * too?

Unless baseball bans them and recants on all the seasons before Jose made the Club, the stats stay on the books. If the stats are on te book they are all members of the Club...and since its not an offical record tracked by baseball, there is not need for the *...

I am not denying that Soriano ever used steroids... but there really is nothing to base that acusation on, other than his one year of 40 homeruns... but, in his defense, he has hit 33 or more homeruns 4 other times in his career, and will likely reach the 30 HR mark this year too... It's not like the 46 HR year was his only big hitting year...

Anytime there is proof that could lead to an asterisk there should be some type of penalty but since virtually none of the modern day records will never see the asterisk why question it on a club ?

Even if Bonds used Roids, there was no way he was doing it in '96. It wasn't until 1999 that he got freakishly huge.
Besides, being on steroids would inhibit someone's ability to steal bases. It harms the joints--not to mention the sheer muscle mass.

Well...tell that to Ben Johnson when he whipped Carl Lewis at 100 meters.

Anyway, best season I ever saw was Eric Davis at 37 homer and 50 steals in a 129 game season, in 1987...now he should have juiced given that he missed so many games with injuries...back then though...in 1987...the excuse was, "The ball was juiced that year"...Sports Illustrated proved it by taken measurements on the balls that year compare to past years...

There is always an excuse...

Wasn't Bobby Bonds like one home-run away from going 40-40 one year?

"Mr. 30-30" sure was...1973 the dude goes 39-43...then he comes back in in 1977 and goes 37-41...5 seasons of 30-30 in all...back when it wasn't easy hitting a lot of dingers...

Also underrated and never mentioned is Ron Gant...back to back 30-30's in 1990 and 1991...and seem to flirt with it from time to time...
