Papi, wont play the whole season
I think that your rational is wrong. You cannot penalize a player for their personal health injuries that they have no control over.

And at this current day in the 2006 Season:
Jeter-127 Games
Ortiz-128 Games

Cool Re: AL MVP: Vote Now!

I vote for Mariano Rivera. He may really be "most valuable." Otherwise I would vote for Ortiz

Re: AL MVP: Vote Now!

Ortiz is suppose to return to the line-up Saturday.

But I can't give the MVP award to a guy who's team dropped off the face of the earth and won't come close to making the playoffs.

sure you can a player is more vaulable healthy, then he is injured. If a player isnt there down the stretch why should he win it no matter his stats

The MVP Award is given to an individual athlete who has performed well in the regular season. It would be nice if he helps his team, but the rules don't say that he must be on a team that makes the Playoffs. It is an individual award and not a team award.

True however how important can a player be to a losing team?

They can be very important. Look at Travis Hafner. He is on a terrible team, but they would be horrible if he wasn't winning games with his bat. How many grand slams has he hit to win games this year? How many clutch hits? If they had a bullpen there would not be any other discussion.
