Is this guy a Hall of Famer?

Without revealing the name just yet, I am going to give you some numbers of a player not in the Hall, and you guys tell me if he deserves to be there.
330 plus homers
Almost 1500 RBI
.290 lifetime average
2 batting titles
1 MVP Award
.345 in a World Series
3 Silver Slugger Awards
3 Gold Gloves
Possessed one of the top two throwing arms in the game while he was playing
88 plus RBI seasons
20 plus homers 9 times
150 plus career stolen bases

Re: Is this guy a Hall of Famer?

I love questions that make ya think! Thanx legend! Ok now back to the actual question, you didnt say how many years he played which is a bit important cause 330 homers is impressive but not as impressive if you had a 20 year career to do it in. However based on the substantial data you gave id say yes he belongs in Cooperstown. Not a shoo in by any means but sure give him a plaque. Let me guess as to his identity, is this guy Kirk Gibson?

I would say you are discribing Dave "The Cobra" Parker...and he is on the bubble...I would place two time MVP, 5 time gold glove, +390 homer Dale Murphy ahead of him...but Parker is one of my favorites of all-time...in the late 70's he was the best hitter around...and the throws he made in the All-Star game were the best I have ever seen...

I think you can make a better case for Craig Biggio now closing in on 3,000 hits, +1,700 runs, +250 homers, and +400 SB...but look up the Thread called "The Hall of Good"...Parker belongs in the "Hall of Good"...maybe even in the Hall of Fame.

Based on those numbers alone, I'd say that player could go either way. I'd lean towards no though.

However, you left out some info. First, how many World Series' rings (if any) did he win during his career? and I'd have to get a context of his counterparts during his era to see if he was among the truly best of his time.

I think that letting Parker in creats a situation in which a lot of other players on the fence become a Haller...for instance I rather put in Steve Garvey than Parker...If you let Parker in, you can argue a case for Garvey, Dale Murphy, Jim rice etc...the flood gates open.

Re: Is this guy a Hall of Famer?

He sounds like Hall of Fame potential as long as he stayed "clean". But as Trashed mentioned, it really depends upon how long it took this mysterious player to accomplish these numbers. Those statistics aren't particulary impressive, but they are decent enough for at least consideration to the Hall.

We wouldn't have a Cecil Cooper fan out there, would we?

Re: Is this guy a Hall of Famer?

He played 19 seasons, and went 2-1 in 3 World Series. And it is Dave Parker-Gotham is correct.

Let me give you one more
This guy played over 20 years
Won one batting title
Knocked in over 1500 runs, but only over 100 3 times, over 90 6 times, The last 8 years of his career knocked in over 70 twice
Almost 400 home runs
Had 200 hits once
Did not lead his league ever in home runs or RBI
One World Series, where he hit .379 with 8 RBI
10 Gold Gloves

Dave Parker? Yes put him in. Remember him on the Oakland A's with Canseco and McGwire.

It was Kaline, Gotham.
A class act, yes, but probably in the Hall only because of the 3000 hits. The 1500 RBI are not that impressive, considering his longevity.

True, but it was a bit of a different era...great pitching in thr 60's and eraly 70's...Still its like Sutton getting in strictly on those +300 wins.
