this is one of the dumbest rules i have ever heard

a player hits the ball and rounds first ..... he is tagged out at second .... but he is still credited with a base hit because as soon as he touched first it was ruled a single no matter what happened next

Why is that dumb? The instant he reaches first safely, it's single, no matter what happens after that.
It's like the caught stealing one you posted... touch the base and you get credit for the feat, even if you get thrown out afterwards.

Simon, how can that not be ruled a base hit? He reached first base safely via a hit. He can't lose a hit just because he tried to stretch it into a double.

No, it isn't. You reach first safely and there's no error, it's a base hit. Period. It makes perfect sense.
