Stolen Base Rules

ok here's one i need you smart baseball guys to figure out for me

hypothetical ..... Coco Crisp is on first .... on the first pitch he steals second .... he reaches second safely but slides past the bag .... while he is off the bag he is tagged out .... how is it scored ?

i ask because i know baseball has some weird rules and i figured he would get credit for the stolen base as he did make it there successfully .... then he was tagged out after the steal

Re: Stolen Base Rules

well if he contacted the bag before he slid past , he would be safe. and it would count as a steal.

but if he didnt touch it and was tagged he would be out and it would just be counted as an attempt at a stolen base. but i think he actually slid past a base while stealing second earlier this year is a game i saw. i think it was against cleveland. but he reached back and grabbed before he was tagged

Re: Stolen Base Rules

maybe i wasnt clear

he slides into second and touches the bag and beats the tag ... but his momentum carries him off the bag while the second baseman still has the ball .... he is then tagged and called out

is he still credited with a stolen base .... after all he was initially safe

again this is a hypothetical situation .... i know it happens but im not quoting a specific event

Re: Stolen Base Rules

I don't know the rules but it would seem like two separate events. He's safe for the steal but out for being caught off base.

Re: Stolen Base Rules

i would think he would be called safe since he was already safe and still moving as part of the play that was just called and established as finished

Yep, I do believe that's correct... a steal followed by a pickoff.
