That's how I feel about them more or less. They have talent if not so much in sports knowledge (there are more knowlegable guys to listen to) as in putting on an entertaining radio show. I don't like 'em but I admit I listen to them whenever I can. What does that tell you? The other point is funny how after talking about the Superbowl today I know M&MD will jump right into their favorite topic baseball.

Cool Re: WFAN'S Mike And The Mad Dog...Shut The Radio Please!

This is a good column by Phil Mushnick of the NY POST. That's the thing that drives you nuts about Francessa. It's one thing when he's arrogant about sports, but when he's an expert on everything else..From movies, to TV, to John F. Kennedy.

Quote:
WHAT would Super Bowl Week be without a lecture from Professor Francesa? After all, the man knows everything.

Monday, in Florida for Supe 41, Francesa gifted Chris Russo and other WFAN listeners a U.S. history lesson. Miami Beach, Francesa explained, wasn't much until Jackie Gleason, in the 1960s, made it the home of his popular TV show.

"Jackie Gleason," puffed Francesa, "put Miami Beach on the map."

Russo, in the role of Grasshopper, seated at the wise man's feet, seemed both fascinated and believing of this "fact." Perhaps some listeners were equally enlightened.

And then, to emphasize both this "fact" and his wisdom - as if it might be on the final exam - Prof. Francesa repeated it: "Jackie Gleason put Miami Beach on the map."

Gee, thanks, Professor Mike, except for one thing: You're full of it. Again.

In 1964, when Gleason's show first appeared from Miami Beach, Gleason and other top entertainers were drawn there because it already was "on the map," and had been since the 1920s, when Miami Beach first became known as a playground for the rich, famous and infamous.

In the 1920s, Al Capone owned a mansion in Miami Beach. In 1947, Capone died in Miami Beach. By the mid-1930s, Miami had three daily newspapers and air-conditioned trains daily left Northern cities for Miami Beach.

Two of America's largest and most legendary hotels, The Fontainebleau and the Eden Roc, were up and running by 1956 - in Miami Beach. The Fontainebleau was the setting of the 1960 Jerry Lewis movie, "The Bellboy."

Hialeah and Gulfstream Parks, both on the fringes of Miami Beach, opened in 1925 and 1939, respectively. Both opened to serve the sporting interests of Miami Beach's visitors and residents. Miami Beach's famous Joe's Stone Crab restaurant drew famous people who were long dead before Jackie Gleason hit town.

But in 1964, according to the all-knowing Francesa, "Jackie Gleason put Miami Beach on the map." Geez, what a blowhard.

Re: WFAN'S Mike And The Mad Dog...Shut The Radio Please!

Mushnick has had a long-running feud with Francesa for years. I listen to them all the time, but these guys are famous for always, and I mean always, using one word when they mean another. And they are nicer to the callers when they are by themselves rather than when they are on the air together.

Re: WFAN'S Mike And The Mad Dog...Shut The Radio Please!

Today M&MD were going on and on about some personal buisness like a vacation Dog was gonna take and how Francesca hates talking sports to taxi drivers. Dog was laughing his admittedly annoying laugh (credit Trashed again for the call!) for tens of minutes seemingly. Still I guess you gotta take the good with the bad and M&MD are still the best sports show on the radio but one of their flaws is they are a bit too self important which we've established and that sometimes leads them to getting off track like they did today. Their radio show still makes watching sports more fun regardless. Legend where do you hear Mushnick on the radio? I like anyman who stands up to Vince McMahon and that silly garbage kids watch that his company puts on TV.

I could barely listen during the Super Bowl week when they were in Miami. The reason? Because Mike Francessa doesn't get the idea that after he asks a question to a guest, he's not supposed to talk over him.

How about Francessa for once, asking a question to a guest and then letting the person answer?

Yup, that's classic Francesca. He really is full of himself and all his listeners know it while Dog is a whiner. Yet they tune in each day (including me) to listen to those guys so I wonder if that's not some kind of reverse charm or something!

Mushnick has a column that runs in the New York Post. He is constantly pointing out how television runs (and ruins) sports) and is a very good read. He absolutely detests Francesa and mentions him in a negative light every chance he gets, which is often.

Francesa responded to Mushnick's column by saying that the Friday before the Super Bowl, Mushnick should have found more important things to write about, other than the Miami Beach.

And therein lies Francesa's hypocrisy. The Monday after the Super Bowl, there were enough issues to talk about that could have taken up the whole 5 1/2 hour radio show.

But in 1 segment,Francesa gave us his expertise on the upcoming Academy Awards. That couldn't have waited until a slower news day?

Re: WFAN'S Mike And The Mad Dog...Shut The Radio Please!

It was Sommers and Benigno who got me into that station in the early 90's when I listened to the overnight.

Mike F. takes a simple job like sports talk and tries to amplify his importance...It's like a 5 grade science teacher lecturing about rocket science! I hate when he claims to be at every major sports event..."I was at that game" I also hate his friendship with Parcells. It's like he's saying "I'm friends with Bill and that makes me better and smarter than all of you small time fans" I also hate his "I love Billy Joel" segments. I like Billy Joel too but, Mike acts like he's the authority on Billy Joel. And on Movies...Mike doesn't like science fiction films but makes fun of some of his producers at the show for not having any "depth" movie tastes. Some nerve that guys has.

And Dog is the corniest guy at the station. I thought Springteen fans were supposed to be cool. Mad Dog is not rock n roll! I hate when they have a guest on (especially some old guy) and the old guy tells some story and Chris does that phoney "wow". What would this guy be doing if Mike wasn't there to boss him around? Oh and by the way...Mad Dog always has a problem with showboat atheletes like T.O., Well what the heck is it that you do with that annoyying "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAnd..." and the beggining of your show...Sounds like showboating to me!

lol Ltron, sounds like you agree with the majority of M&MD dissenters.

I agree with you on Beningo and Somers. The two are gold.

Beningo and Sommers are great, especially Beningo. he lets people have their say and rarely tries to embarass someone unless they are really asking for it. Sommers is perhaps the most original of the entire group, but I could see how he could be an acquired taste.

I can't listen to Beningo. It makes me nervous. He's constantly stuttering. Listen...He leads every sentence with.."Ah AH AH AH...He also acts too much like a reactive fan. One day Chad Pennington is the next Joe Montana. The next day, he's a bum...One day, Willie Randolph gets ripped to shreds for batting Carlos Beltran 2nd, the next day, he's a genius.
