| Congress Plans Steroid Hearings in January It was reported about a month ago that Congress was planning to hold hearings on steroids in 2008. Now it's known that two House panels are scheduled to hold hearings on the matter. The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform will hold hearings on January 15th, and invitations will be sent to former Senator George Mitchell, MLB Commish Bud Selig and MLBPA President Donald Fehr. The other hearing is set for January 23rd from the Subcommittee on commerce, trade and consumer protection. It's assumed some players may be invited to testify in front of Congress. There is proposed legislation to classify HGH as a "Schedule III" substance, taking it under the jurisdiction of the DEA. "Penalty for possession could be as high as three years in prison and even higher for illegal manufacture or distribution." The other legislation being proposed would "make it illegal to sell dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) to anyone under 18." Congress to hold hearings on steroid use - Yahoo! News The hearings set for the 23rd would revolve around "steroid use in professional sports. Chairman Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL) has said that pro wrestling will be part of the investigation, second only to baseball." So I'm not sure if it will be strictly baseball, or baseball and wrestling or other sports as well. |
