Strange Baseball Feats & Records

This thread came out a story legend shared with us in another thread, about how Lou Piniella was once "thrown out" for the cycle. Lou was forced out at first and then tagged out at 2nd, 3rd and home, all in one game.

What are some other odd baseball feats and records?

Re: Strange Baseball Feats & Records

The Yankees scored in every inning the other day in a complete game victory over Toronto at home-obviously they didn't need to play the bottom of the ninth.
Back in the early part of the 20th century- One team no-hit another, and the next day the team that had gotten no-hit turned around and no-hit the team that had just no-hit them!

Here's some quick ones to run past you guys:

-Barry Bonds was intentionally walked with bases loaded on May 28th, 1998.
-Bill Mueller was the last player to hit two grand slams in one game. He completed this incredible feat on July 29th, 2003 (in back-to-back innings).

In 1971, Al Kaline ended and won a game by grounding into a double play. While the Red Sox threw the ball around the infield, 2 runners scored and Kaline was credited with no RBI.

I'm guessing that there must've been none out before his DP and just two out afterwards, right? Man, you would think SOMEBODY on the Sox would've realized that...

Re: Strange Baseball Feats & Records

Actually, what the Sox probably didn't count on was a runner from second scoring on the play. Either the 2nd baseman or 1st baseman was out to lunch on that one.

Another play I read about is really hilarious. In 1971, in a game between the Tigers and Royals, the late, great Cesar Gutierrez (7 hits in a game prior to total obscurity) tripled off the KC pitcher. The pitcher, believing Gutierrez had failed to touch first base, threw to first on an appeal play....and into the dugout, allowing Gutierrez to trot home. Lovely!

Re: Strange Baseball Feats & Records

How about the game where Babe Ruth walked the first batter as a pitcher for the Red Sox, was thrown out of the game for arguing balls and strikes, and the pitcher that came on to replace him, I am thinking his name was Carl Mays, proceeded to see the walked man thrown out trying to steal and then hurled a perfect game!

Re: Strange Baseball Feats & Records

This isn't terribly remarkable, but I noticed in yesterday's Red Sox-Yankees box that Boston's Willie Mo Pena played LF-CF-RF in the game. That can't be a frequent occurrence.

Re: Strange Baseball Feats & Records

That's an odd record, StigRoarHusby!

But wouldn't it be really amazing if a utility player played all the positions?

Re: Strange Baseball Feats & Records

I believe it may have been done by Jose Oquendo of the Cardinals once, but I'm not sure and, well, quite frankly its too close to the start of Lost for me to go check right now. Maybe tomorrow.

Re: Strange Baseball Feats & Records

Bert Campaneris with the KC Athletics in 1965 and then Cesar Tovar with the Twins in 1968 did it, they played a different position each inning!
