Joe Morgan: .271, 268 HR, 1133
Nellie Fox: .288, 35 HR, 790
Brooks Robinson: .267, 268 HR, 1357
Robin Yount: .285, 251, 1406
Rickey Henderson: .279, 297, 1115

That's a good start. All current or future hall of famers. Legit or not?
I thought Robin Yount produced better numbers than that. I am already used to the steroid-era! Baseball will never be the same again.

Cool Re: Who is a Hall of Famer playing right now?

Once again, In my opinion, stats can be a barometer but they can't be the only thing you look at.

1) First of all, you can't compare numbers from the 70's to today's numbers. Graig Nettles won the AL HR title in 1976 with 32 HR's.

2) Take a guy like Ozzie Smith: I don't care if he hit .150. He's a hall of famer because he was the best fielding shortstop in the history of the game.

3) Just ask yourself, in the era that someone plays, were they dominant, great, or have contributed something to baseball so unique that they transcend their numbers

So: Ricky Henderson goes in without a doubt. Roger Maris should be in too because of his 61 homers in my opinion. That's why Kirby Puckett gets in because his accomplishments exceeded his stats. Goose Gossage should be in. That's why Jim Rice should be in.

Conversely, in my opinion Don Sutton is not a hall of famer. I don't know that he was ever the best pitcher on his team, much less a dominant force in the league.

Anybody agree with me on this logic?

Re: Who is a Hall of Famer playing right now?

I agree with your logic. I also need to say that the more I reseasrch some of the players of the past, the more I am convinced that the baseball writers should have nothing to do with Hall of Fame selections. For example, Johnny Mize won four home run titles, 3 RBI titles, a batting title, hit .314 in a fifteen year career cut short three years by military service, 379 homers, well over 1,300 RBI, led the AL in pinch hits three times at the end of his career, is the only man to hit 3 homers in a game six times, and once hit 51 homers in 1947 while striking out only 42 times. Yet he had to be voted in by the Veteran's Committee in 1981, 18 years after his retirement.

That's a great catch. It sounds like he should be in.

The Big Cat...Comperable homer numbers to Ralph Kiner (though Kiner had 7 straight homer titles I think)...not much different numbers then Jim Rice though...except for the military service (which robbed him of about 75-90) homers)...

Griffey Jr. is a first round lock for the hall. Who was more dominant in the 90's in all of baseball. He has only slightly fallen off because of injuries.

Randy Johnson is also a lock. He is the most dominant lefty in the game.....maybe ever.

I agree with everything else except I don't think Vlad will get in.

Re: Who is a Hall of Famer playing right now?

Vladimir Guerrero is on pace for 500 homers and 1,600 RBI. That would make him mortal lock for the Hall. He already has eight 100 RBI seasons and a lifetime .324 average, plus an MVP Award.

Vlad looks like a lock from here as well...anyone want to back Andrew Jones?

Re: Who is a Hall of Famer playing right now?

Just because he is on pace for that does not mean he will hit it. He has been injured a lot the last couple years. If he can keep playing like he has, he will be a shoe in.

Good point there, azrael492.

Sadly, a player doesn't always achieve his potential.

Re: Who is a Hall of Famer playing right now?

If he got hit by a bus tomorrow he would be in.

Jones needs a few more years of 30-100, he doesn't have the high lifetime average- only .267 going into the year. Gold Gloves help but he need at least three more big years to have a great chance

Speaking of gold gloves, what do you think about Torii Hunter?

I vote NO.

Re: Who is a Hall of Famer playing right now?

ok, the time for me to chime in has come

you all just sit back and nod your heads in agreement with what i say

if all goes well Ortiz will be in the HOF

thats right, i said Ortiz

he is only 30 so id say if he can stay healthy he can have atkeast 7 more real good years

over the past 4 years with Boston

HR's......31, 41, 47 and 54.......if he can average 40 over the next 7 years he will go over 500

RBI.........101, 139, 148, 137.......if he can average 120 he will have over 1600

BA........288, 301, 300, 287......not great, but better then some in the Hall eh ?

as long as they keep him protected in the line-up with someone like Manny and he stays healthy those stats should be easy to achive

and with todays training and drugs playing until he is 37 should be easy as well
