Let me see if I can take a crack at explaining this. The national league and the american league each have 3 divisions, east, central, and west. The winner of each division is guaranteed a playoff spot. They fill in the last spot with the team with the best record in each league. The example you showed is just showing who has the best record from the teams remaining.

Or is this helps, look at it like this - there are 4 AL playoff teams and 4 NL playoff teams. In each of those, the teams will be the East champion, the Central champion, the West champion and the team with the best record that ISN'T one of those three (doesn't matter which division).

I wouldn't. Just choose one based on your own personal preference. Whether it's a certain player, locale, manager, franchise history, uniforms, stadium, whatever.
