The U.S. women likely would have beaten Venezuela for the softball gold, considering how overpowering the Americans have been this year -- and in Rio. They never got the chance, but still got the gold. Organizers decided that the Americans (4-0, with three no-hitters) would be awarded the gold and Venezuela (3-1) would get the silver after Saturday's games were rained out. A steady rain meant the fields, which have been troublesome all week, probably wouldn't be in shape to play on Sunday, the final day of the Pan American Games.
So the U.S. team has its eighth straight title.
"It's exciting to defend our title. I think the team played well and, as always, I am excited to be apart of such a great tradition,'' said Laura Berg of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., who competed in her third Pan Ams. "The people of Brazil have been great. We could have had better weather, but overall it was a good tournament for our team.''
