Let's Fix MLB

i think MLB needs some tweaking nothing major (in my mind) just minor things here and there

i would like them to shorten the season ...... seems so odd that after 82 games the Yankees are 11 games out and still some think they can win the AL East (and i agree it is possible) the season is just too long

also start the World Series a little earlier .... kinda chilly in October for the game of the Summer

and how about having the All Star game on July 4th every year ? .. that would be a great new tradition

Although I voted that the MLB is just fine, there are a couple things I would change:

Reduce the # of games in the regular season and move the start of the season back to May 1 - this would eliminate the game postponements due to snow.

Also, get rid of the all-star game winner receiving home field advantage during the WS. That has to be the dumbest idea ever....

Re: Let's Fix MLB

I'll take the blame for "Holy Cow"

The season does seem to long and drawn out. One way to have the same number of games in a shorter period of time would be to have some scheduled double headers. The lack of them points to $$$$'s first, sport second. By creating some double headers the season could start later and end earlier.

I personally do not get wound up about all star events in any sport. They mean nothing.

The other area that bothers me, and it isn't just MLB, is drug testing. These guys make millions, are role models, even if they don't sign up to be one and now we are breaking records with almost full knowledge that performance enhancing drugs were used. Where will this part of the game ultimately end ? In my warped view if you are going to be in professional sports then drug testing should happen often and if they are positive the punishments should be progressive in nature and when a specific amount of times is met then it is good bye. I suspect my views are not seen as viable by many but that's OK ... it wouldn't be the first time I was in the minority with my opinion.

Get rid of Bud Selig...the rest will take care of itself...

Most corporations would have sent the leader packing by now...

Re: Let's Fix MLB

I'd eliminate the DH rule and one round of the playoffs. Other than that, I think it's fine.

Then that means you don't like the wild-card, right? If it weren't for the wild card, then the Red Sox wouldn't have made their miraculous run to the WS Crown back in 2004, right?

Re: Let's Fix MLB

The things I'd look to change:

-Shorten Interleague play/More intraleague games (the Mets play some NL teams only 6x per year)
-Use replays for home-run calls
-All-Star Game: Keep the winner decides HFA in the W.S., Keep it during the 2nd week of July

Can't really think of any major changes I would want.

Good point, but I liked it so much better when it was just 2 divisions in each league and only the champions of each made the playoffs.

Re: Let's Fix MLB

But Lefty, without the wildcard the last month of the season could be brutally boring if division leaders have a big lead.

At least with the wild card, one 2nd place team will still be fighting for a playoff spot. It adds a lot to the end of the season.

All I know is it worked well for a lot of years before the wildcard came along, and I don't see why it wouldn't work well again, especially if the two divisions in each league were competitively well balanced.

Re: Let's Fix MLB

Eric Karros made a good point today on Fox Sports before the baseball game. He said that since the All-Star Game winner has the HFA during the WS, then get rid of the mandatory all-star from each team in the league. He definitely has a point...

Yeah, he definitely has a point. Either make it an exhibition or an important game, but this straddling the line between the two is silly. If home field's on the line, then the best players should be there. If not, then enforce the one-player-per-team rule and the fan voting and whatnot. I personally prefer the festival atmosphere of an "unimportant" All-Star Game.
