It really will be old-timers day in the major leagues on Wednesday, when a record seven pitchers in their 40s are scheduled to start. The New York Yankees' Roger Clemens (44), Philadelphia's Jamie Moyer (44), Detroit's Kenny Rogers (42), San Diego's Greg Maddux (41), the New York Mets' Tom Glavine (41), Houston's Woody Williams (40) and Atlanta's John Smoltz (40) are set to pitch on the same day.

The wonders of modern medicine. So how many of these 40-year-olds come away with wins?

Re: Record 7 40-Year-Olds To Start Wed.

New York Yankees' Roger Clemens (44) vs. Baltimore - ND
Philadelphia's Jamie Moyer (44) vs. Cincinnati - W
Detroit's Kenny Rogers (42) vs. Texas - W
San Diego's Greg Maddux (41) vs. San Francisco - W
New York Mets' Tom Glavine (41) vs. St. Louis - L
Houston's Woody Williams (40) vs. Milwaukee - L
Atlanta's John Smoltz (40) vs. Washington - W

So those are my predictions. 4-2 with 1 no-decision.

Re: Record 7 40-Year-Olds To Start Wed.

Clemens will go five and win when Yankees score 12.
Moyer, Rogers, Glavine will lose or get no decisions in losses.
Smoltz will win, Williams will get bombed, and Maddox will beat the hapless Giants, as bad a hitting team as there is except when the Yanks are in town.
That many 40 year olds is a testament to the absence of good pitchers today in baseball. Only Smoltz is anything near what he was on a regular basis.

Don't know if it's the modern medicine or that there are way too many teams and not enough good pitching to go around.

Ha ha ha! So, much ado about nothing, eh? Well, the record will eventually fall.

Maybe they can get Randy Johnson to start on the same day and make the record 8. What do you think?

I thinks a little of both. When you look at the list, all of the pitchers can still pretty much dominate (with the exception of Woody Williams). And you have 4 HOFs on there, too (Clemens, Maddux, Smoltz, & Glavine). To still be pitching in their 40s, they still have some stuff...

I agree. You can't say that their longevity is due to solely to poor overall pitching quality when some of these guys are still doing darn well.

Now does that include pitchers only. What about position players? Cause if Julio Franco gets a chance to start, that should def be included. It's funny, we talk about Roger Clemens and how he is I think 44 starting. But Julio is "supposedly" 48 and plays. And I say supposedly because it is a known fact that a lot of players from Latin America have changed their age to a younger age. Julio could very well be 50 or 52 and we not even know it.

The record would've just been pitchers, but you're absolutely right - players all around are playing longer, and Franco could well be in his 50s. Who's the oldest player ever to play in an MLB game and how old was/is he? Anyone know?
