Last year baseball tried copyrighting player stats. A judge ruled that stats were a public domain. They can be seen in newspapers and online sites, so they could not be copyrighted. Since then baseball has decided to change their tactics. Now they are sueing because they don't want sites to be able to use logos or player likenesses. Are they being too petty, or do they have an arguement? How much money could they stand to make if they win this case?

Okay, maybe they have a case if certain leagues are using team names and images without permission, but come one! What is wrong with Major League Baseball? Fantasy baseball is one of the primary ways people enjoy their sport. Why in the world would they want to take that away from us, unless they're trying to centralize and control it. In which case, I wouldn't play anyway. Not going to allow MLB to monopolize it like that.

That is along the lines of what I was thinking also. If it weren't for fantasy baseball, i would not pay attention to most teams unless they were playing the Reds. Because of fantasy baseball, I pay attention and watch just about every game. I have to see how my players are doing.

I always get the view that yet another person is trying to extract more money from my pocket. I play in a NASCAR fantasy league but in no way would ever pay to do it. There are leagues that you can pay to join but they have a pay off of some type when it is over. I would guess that this is just a shot in the dark by MLB. It just doesn't seem possible to be able to shut down fantasy leagues. I also agree that it increases the popularity of any sport. It'll be interesting to follow this one.

Yep, its not like they are not gaining a fan base from it...I would think they would knock off this nonsense by now...

It's gotta be all about the money. MLB sees a chance to put more in their pockets by forcing us to pay-to-play fantasy through them. Little do they know that a good chunk of us wouldn't bother to pay for fantasy baseball, and ESPECIALLY wouldn't pay THEM for fantasy baseball.
