All-Overpaid & All-Underpaid Teams

Great article by Yahoo! Sports today, listing the All-Overpaid & All-Underpaid Teams.

Leading the All-Overpaid squad is Oakland C Jason Kendall: "Might as well start with the worst contract in all of baseball. How Kendall parlayed 55 home runs and decent peripherals into a six-year, $60 million deal from Pittsburgh before the 2002 season is mystifying. Even though the Pirates are paying $5.5 million of Kendall's salary, Oakland is shoveling nearly $8 million toward a .182 hitter with two extra-base hits (both doubles) in 165 at-bats."

Lots of good, underpaid talent on the All-Underpaid team, but the inclusion of Sammy Sosa catches my attention: "Uncle. There's been so much noise from people looking for Sammy to get some credit that it sounds more like Sousa than Sosa. He may be fake. He may be disingenuous. But the man is a bargain. Even if his on-base percentage stinks, Sosa's run production – 12 doubles, 10 home runs and 39 RBIs – makes up for it."

What really makes Sosa a bargin is that he has a Latin following and he now plays in Texas. That has to be good for the gate.

I'm not sure Rolen (great defender, good bat) and Ryan (brilliant closer) should have been on the list.... but, yeah, great article!

Reyes and Wright playing for a combined $5 million this year.... Minaya's a genius.

Re: All-Overpaid & All-Underpaid Teams

That Kendall contract is just awful. I always liked the guy as a player because he was a hardnosed kind of guy who could hit (although never for a lot of power) but he had his fair share of injuries. Still why did Pittsburgh feel the need to dish out their money...that much, on him. This is the same era I believe where they let all their big players go to other teams. Wonder when Jason Bay will get his payday.

As a Mets fan, knowing we have Reyes and Wright locked up for several years...it's a great feeling to say the least.

They will get a raise, don't worry about that.

Yeah, no doubt about it, they were fools to give Kendall that much dough. He didn't last too long in Pa. after that deal, I believe. Bay isn't doing too bad ($18.25 million over four years) but, yeah, you've gotta believe he's eventually going to cost too much for the Pirates to keep him.

Let's not forget Grady Sizemore, too. He's making under $1 million this season, but last year there was some MVP talk around him. What a steal.

Does Ryan Howard fall under the underpaid category?

Re: All-Overpaid & All-Underpaid Teams

I recall that Chan Ho Park used to be the most over-paid player in baseball, under a contract from the Padres.

Most of the under-paid athletes had sparked life in their swing or pitches over recent years, meaning that their contracts were negociated before then.
